My neighbor a few yrs back was just like this mom.
she 2 let her kids roam free, they were at my house 24/7, until her 20 month old got hit by a car in the parking lot of the complex. She had let her 20 month old outside by himself while she was inside talking on the phone, she was talking to me when our other neighbor a young single mom hit him when she was backing up.
This same little boy had been t my house the day before all alone, we came home from church and found him fully clothed sitting in our waddling pool. No mom or dad insight.
This little boy was air lifted to children's and spent a month in ICU. he has brain damage that will never be healed and eyes that will never work the right way again. His head was broken in so many places that he will never look normal.
Shortly after he came home, he was left to roam free again, he and other 2 yr little girl that this mom was suppose to be watching, wondered into our home on a cold JAn day with no coats on at all. hubby and I told them to stay in our house and see how long it would take for the mom to come looking, it was about 30 minutes. She came running in freaking out, asking if we had seen her kid and the kid she was to be watching.
It was sad, but almost losing her baby by being hit by a car didn't change the way she watched him.
A few months later, he was again left to play alone outside, and a dog bite him. The dog was not on a lash, and she tried to get the owners in trouble, but DFS was called on her b/c it was the 2nd 911 call in under 6 months to her house for child neglect. DFS never never ever paid her a visit and she ended up moving for fear of being reported to DFs again.
It is sad, but some of these moms never learn.
I'm so sorry for what you are going though, It's a hard spot to be in.
That is a really sad story....
