So my husband and I went to a pond near our home today, and a woman walked over by us with a bunch of kids and 2 ducklings and said..
"do you want to see them before we let them go?"

"But they are babies" I said

"the guy at the farm store said they were old enough" She replied

"But they will DIE, The other ducks will kill them" I said

"I have been doing this for 7 years without a problem." She tried to put one duckling in the water, but it kept running back to her

"we should do this with less people around" She said as she walked away.

My husband made me leave so that I wouldn't wind up in jail, I wanted to kill her....
I know those ducklings are probably dead by now, and I feel like I should have knocked her out and taken them.

Does anyone have any advice for how to handle this situation in the future, I feel so rotten for not doing more, but I was simply in shock that someone would do that.

Wow, unfortunately there are still people who treat animals as throw away pets. Some people just should not have animals at all.

Well the could ofs would just be like adding regretts. If you see it happen again, ask the person if you can take the ducklings to raise as your pets and let them know that the ducklings would be very well taken care of. If the person still is determined to just dump the animals call the Humane Society in your area and/or animal control to report them for illegal dumping. While calling on a cell phone watch where they take the ducklings and when they leave you can swoop in and rescue the poor things.

Even if you do not have room to raise the ducklings you could find a loving home for them or let the Humane Society take them to find loving home for them.

I would of clocked her upside the head with a tree and taken them babies. I cannot believe people I really can't. I would go back tomorrow to see if you can find them. If it were me i would be out in the dark looking for them.

sadly I get the impression that she bought them for the specific purpose of letting them go...

They weren't more than a week old..

If they were that young it may be a miracle if they survive the night with all the predators that could get them.
Still I would want to check to see if I could find them the next day as that would really bug me. If not pester hubby to grab the flash light to go night hunting for baby ducks.

Wow, it's great that you guys have Humane Society and can report illegal dumping.
I can't do that in my country

I would make a trip to the farm store and let them know I will be buying my supplies elsewhere. Let them know they're giving bad information. As for these ducks you could have tried to convince her to let you take them home and raise them a little longer. What you did with them after that would be up to you. I don't think farm raised ducks or geese should be released into the wild. Make an exception for wild ones caught in a bad situation and raised for the purpose of letting them go.
