If you are going to do something black and white, you should try to find a subject that will let you emphasizes line and/or value. If you are going for something with color, I recommend using a toned paper and colored pencils. Lots of people will submit drawings using pencil or charcoal on white paper, the paper being the highlight value and then shading in the shadows of their subject, not many will use a toned paper as the starting middle value and then draw in the highlights and the shadows. So that's one way to set yourself apart from the competition.
