Attention Muscovy lovers

Rocking is a good sign. I hope all rock right on out of the shell....lol.
I have two young ducks, a duck and a drake actually that like to pull pullet feathers and eat them. These are the two that I bought as "Muscovy" eggs from some folks in TN and pictured below. Grrrr. What a waste of time & money for me.
Don't know about potted plants as I have these two penned up in my 25x50' coop, but they sure like eating bamboo.

A couple of very nice looking MUSCOVYS, right?

Oh Man! Are they sweet ducks?? My ducklings aren't very social, I got them at 5 wks and they haven't warmed up to me a whole lot yet. They do know I supply the food but they will keep their distance. I might take them down to the pond in a few weeks, lots of neighborhood muscovy, 3 geese, 2 mallards. If I keep them in the yard I will have to clip their wings.

I thought in Fl they were hated and hunted and slaughtered, I could never let mine go into any pond or river for fear they would over populate and become targets of hate. Look whats happening in Ft Myers.

Oh wow, our community paid to have fox trapped and relocated to protect our Muscovy. I want to keep them in the yard but the pond is across the road. The Muscovy and Geese are always out front wanting to be fed. My neighbor, who has lived there since 76 put a big feed pan out for them everyday. They are so spoiled they come in my garage looking for food. I love them and they are super friendly but I'm hesitant about letting mine out there. I guess I'll work my nerve up to clip their wings (I don't want to hurt them). I've watched many videos on YouTube but I've never done it.

My .02.........

Now, since I don't live too far from Ocala, I have a comment to make about killing the ducks. I understand it, but I don't like it one bit. People caused this problem by feeding the WILD ducks which kept them there and they bred and had more ducks and people thought they were cute and fed them and so on. If people wouldn't feed the WILD ducks OR take their little Easter duckling that got too big to the pond/lake, we would never had gotten to the point where these ducks were slaughtered in the first place. People, no doubt with good intentions at heart, unknowingly caused the slaughter.

My ducks are more than a dual purpose duck. They are for my enjoyment to look at as I think they are pretty neat, they are for eggs for my consumption and they are for meat for my table in that order. That being said, I may never eat one, but if push comes to shove and hard times come upon me, I will eat them.

My solution to the wild Muscovy population would be to educate people that these ducks are good to eat and have an open hunting season on them. They could only be captured by live trap or by netting. Now some of you may say OMG I could never eat a Muscovy duck, but I bet you eat chicken or cow or pigs or turkey, maybe even venison huh?

I'm still surprised as to why eating duck hasn't caught on in this country as I have seen it abroad.

Bottom line and in closing. I like my little ducks very much and I'd hate to see the day come when I seriously looked at them as food.

It's ok if you disagree with me. I understand that some people want ducks for pets only, but you'll never see a duck diaper in this house.

Dianne88, what day do you expect them to hatch? Hope they come out soon.

By-the-way, my little ducklings poop 500 times a day !!!! Times ten !!!!. I'll be glad to see them outside on wire, but still heated in a week or two.

Well, maybe I exaggerated on how many times they poop, but not much.....

Very easy to clip their wings.

I agree with you 100% on it all, I just know how out of hand it can get and we already have a feral Muscovy flock living on the river we live on but thank goodness not our part or I'd probably have hundreds of Scovy's just kidding, but I don't want to add to the problem that could brood in the future from over population. It's such a shame they won't allow these ducks to be used for food to feed those that could use the help. Such a waste.

That would be a great idea, feeding the hungry!

You're absolutely right. Feeding the hungry is much better than them going to the landfill or incinerator. There is such a stigmatism associated with Muscovy ducks that is just stupid (IMO). ML is right when she says so many people just hate the Muscovy. The retired and elite live in housing areas around ponds and lakes here in Florida and the golf courses have lakes, there are lakes and ponds everywhere here. The ducks poop around the lake, on the sidewalks, in their yards etc., and people just don't like it. After a while, people detest the Muscovy. Why the Muscovy? Because even wild Muscovys are fairly friendly and don't take flight as soon as humans get near. They are looked on as pigeons.......GIANT pigeons.

Surely there are people that could use some meat on their table. Let them come in and harvest these unwanted ducks. No fees, no licenses, just no guns, only nets and LIVE traps. Not that I'm against guns, I'm not, but I don't want any shooting where these ducks are a problem, in neighborhoods or housing developments.

If the state would adopt an idea like this, maybe it would control the wild population issue and people would learn about these ducks. Just having Muscovys as pets won't earn any respect for the ducks here in Florida. Once they become a viable food source, then maybe people will look at Muscovys under a different light.
