Attention Muscovy lovers

I work in the Surgery Center so I bring home disposable things I think I could use for my furry babies

. He uses his teddy for a step to get in and out of his pool. LOL
Well that's cool better than throwing things away... aww makes me want to squeeze that lil cutie.

Ok, well, maybe I will just try asking stuff here, and see if I get any responses.

So.....

I just bought my fist Muscovies today, one drake, three females, and two half grown ones.

The adults are all two years old.

I REALLY like the drake, I think his color counts as a lavender, but looking through photos, I am not sure. Anyway, he is a very nice very light blue kind of color.

The three hens are all different too, but pretty.

The two half grown ones are a bit hard to tell what color they will be, the baby female is very light, so a blue or lavender or whatever. The boy looks like he might be a very light solid chocolate. But they are both young, so I realize they will keep changing.

My kids like the color of the baby boy better than the adult drake. I like the color of the drake best.

And there is the problem.........

The lady I bought them from said that the last brooded clutch was 100% infertile, and she had no idea why.

I know with chickens often the fertility goes down in late summer, but I thought that it went down due to heat.....and anyway, it has NOT been hot here.

So, other guesses?

I have been googling, and haven't found anything helpful.

My questions

1. What are common causes of infertile eggs?

2. Is there a risk that the two year old drake is now permanently infertile?

3. Can I keep both males, just in case? Is there a risk that the big drake will kill the young male? I would really like to keep them all together.

Thank you!

It's Tuesday, are we having labor pains yet?????

I haven't had a lot of time to watch them, I did see some rocking this morning! I spent last evening tring to get my 9 wk old ducklings out of the chicken coop. They are pulling the tail feathers on my pullets. They are free ranging the yard during the day and locked up at night in a kennel. They spent the evening munching on my potted plants!! :/

1.Temperatures, improper brooding, genetics, a whole list of reasons and ones most humans will likely not figure out.

2. hard to say, unless you try it yourself you won't know and with a few females, it may not be the male anyways. Could be a female with an issue, having some infertile eggs in a clutch is not unusual, my nest from March, had 5 eggs, 4 worked, 1 did not, experienced mum too.

3. you can, kill? that would be extreme but not out of the realm of possibility, make sure they have enough room and monitor the behaviour as the young ones become sexually mature. I keep two drakes, they free range but i house separate at night. I also have some almost 6mth drakes, so that has thrown a wrench into the dynamics, they are already fighting with the older males to try and take head spots, again all housed separate at night.

Rocking is a good sign. I hope all rock right on out of the shell....lol.
I have two young ducks, a duck and a drake actually that like to pull pullet feathers and eat them. These are the two that I bought as "Muscovy" eggs from some folks in TN and pictured below. Grrrr. What a waste of time & money for me.
Don't know about potted plants as I have these two penned up in my 25x50' coop, but they sure like eating bamboo.

A couple of very nice looking MUSCOVYS, right?
