Attn BYC! Heard of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS)?

I've actually heard that feed stores could be required to check the customer's NAIS status before selling them feed. No kidding!

I am amazed at the control people want over us - and amazed at those who give them that control with very little thought of the consequences.

i first heard of this in 2005(i think) it was supposed to be mandatory jan of this year. but it had so much neg feed back once people started finding out that it was changed. most feed stores will have a pamphlet about if you ask. it still needs to be watched very closely but dont have a heart attack yet.

It won't work for me now, either. But it worked for me this morning. I don't know if they've exceeded their traffic limit for the day, or if they've just decided to take the site down. We can try again tomorrow. If it still doesn't work, I would guess they are having problems.

But look how sweet North Carolina is to their farmers:

http://www.ncagr.com/HayAlert/EmergencyHay.htm

They have emergency hay stockpiles. Farmers can buy hay for their livestock during the winter in case they run out. Oh no! You have to register your facility if you want to buy.

Naw... it's not mandatory. Not in North Carolina (unless you want to buy hay for your animals in the winter.)

Thanks again to A Homesteading Neophyte for the link. She stays on top of the NAIS fiasco.

Using Google Earth, you can see that I have buildings, and you can see my horse corrals, and make a good guess that I have horses, but you can't tell whether or not any poultry is on the premises.

But they're talking about making it mandatory for 4H, for shows, for any other thing that they can think of.

Mega operations don't have to mark every bird - they can be kept as a lot. Small operations would have to mark and track each one, at a cost of several dollars a bird.

If a predator takes one of your birds, you'd have to figure out which serial # is missing and report it to USDA.

Where did you get the info that hatcheries may already be using the RFID chips??? I searched it and didn't come up with any articles or anything, so I'm wondering where you heard it. Thanks!!!

They can read license plates from a satellite I am sure they could tell you have poultry. Remember Google Earth isn't a spy satellite.

The feed comment makes alot of sense. I could just see people buying feed with their NAIS Ids then selling it under the table to people like us to make a profit......

It's my understanding that the major hatcheries are already implanting chicks for sale with RFID chips. The government can track your birds at any point now anyways. They don't need NAIS.

Which hatcheries? All chicks they sell or special order by request? Any documentation about this? Not one of the major hatcheries' websites that I've visited make any mention about this. Perhaps the Ideal Poultry rep who is a member here can confirm or debunk this.

I'd be interested in knowing if this is fact or conjecture.

I haven't ever heard this either, and seriously doubt it's being done.
I believe the chip would cost more than the chic at this point.
