August 2023 hatch-a-long

I love crests! They are so cute!
And I noticed after looking a little closer at the pictures of my chicks, that some of them have feathered feet! I’ve never had feathered feet chickens before! I’ve wanted some for a while, but I didn’t know that I would get some in this batch!
Buying Barnyard mix hatching eggs from someone else is fun. It’s a game of guess the parents. But sometimes I do like to know what the parents breeds were.
Oh fun!!!! Most of mine have feathered feet. I just love them with boots so seems to be what I am drawn towards

Here’s my first ever successful hatch, beginning to end.

My two Maticoopx 30 incubators: one wirh shipped English Orpingtons from Carolina Rare Chicks, the other with Orpingtons from my flock.

The babies are 3 wks old...and off heat and outdoors...

Their 8ft by 4ft indoor brooder was so simple to clean.

I had placed down flat cardboard pieces prior to the hatch and put the bedding on top of it...

I simple gathered it up, took it outside (without dumping any!!) Dumped it in the compost and shopvacced the remaining bedding out.

A simple spray of lysol...let it air dry...and it is ready for the next batch...that I may or may not be hatching this year 🤣🤣🤣

I have a problem. One of the OEGB eggs hatched. The other two don't look like they will. So, I have a lone chick.

The chicks that are with a momma right now are a week old. Plus, they're standard size. Do I take a chance sneaking in this diminutive fluffball at night, or steal one of her chicks for company? I really didn't want any more chicks inside...

I'd probably pull one inside....

But thats based on watching non broodies with chicks....

Maybe your broody will accept...but I like to play it safe 💗💗

I would try sneaking it under her. I’ve had a hen accept chicks that were a week younger than the others.
But if you feel like it, you could play it safe and keep the chick inside.
