August Hatch-A-Long

Oh my, well both of you be safe and I hope it isn't too bad! :fl
I am so far inland and Dorian isn't even going to make landfall other than skimming the Outer Banks so I doubt I even get a cloud from Dorian. The Eastern quarter of the state could have a Nightmare rain scenario and the wind isn't going to be real friendly either.

Yup, its gonna get cracra over here.

I’m battling with letting my August 1 hatched out too.

I’m so nervous with fall and hawk migration.

Mama is now taking babies anywhere and EVERYWHERE. Tall grasses, anywhere with or without the flock. :-/ I figure if the two week olds are out, everyone may as well be.

I’ve got so many chicks coming I think should be letting my orpingtons out too... but :barnie!!!

I went ahead and put one of my meat birds in with the orpingtons to get them used to the big birds. She is really slow and won’t actually peck them unless they’re really annoying, it’s working great. Plus, I built this great little perch/jungle gym for the babies!

Aw thanks!

Its really nice In our climate I realized they don’t really need full enclosure if they have a roof and it’s predator proof. I lost my first hen to virtually no ventilation in the birds overnight coop, and I felt so awful once I realized that was a problem. I started cutting holes EVERYWHERE in the old coop until I did this. Even I, with really limited (and that’s a stretch) carpentry skills, can cut some wood and staple and screw hardware cloth to it. It wouldn’t work everywhere but it sure works here!

Hi All, not ready hatch a long appropriate, but y’all have tolerated my ramblings so far so... Remember those cockerels that we butchered last weekend? And the one (Greenlegs) that got away, came back, but DD couldn’t stand to butcher it? Well, we’ve been letting the cockerels free range while we are home. DD let them out after school tonight, and the OE cockerel (Lucky) that she planned to keep for breeding disappeared... We found a pile of feathers nearby, at the same site where a bobcat took our duck last spring. Also found a fresh raccoon carcass in the woods, several hundred yards away, no bones cracked open. I think that our bobcat is back. I know better than to name a chicken “Lucky”!!!! :he Now all poultry has to stay locked in for two weeks, which will be really hard with our present numbers!!!! Be careful what you wish for!
