August Hatch-A-Long

I know, I know, I know. Ditto. I hate the confinement. Im really worried for the next couple of weeks with hawk migration. Im about to let the Aug 1 hatches out to the big world, and Im sure the 50 meat birds coming wednesday will just be running out free earlier than later too in this weather.

Im actually talking to several livestock guardian dog folks, thinking that before I scale up drastically I need to get one.
Yes, we probably share the same hawk migration path - Oklahoma- Texas? I’m not even sure which direction that they’re migrating! LGDs must be the holy grail of chicken keeping - wish I could go that route!

Everyone swears my Great Pyrenees but I'll tell you what, my Doberman was amazing with the chickens before she passed away. We never had any predator issues before and this year I've had a lot.
I should say, since she passed away I've had a lot of predators. She was protecting the chickens up until her last moments this year too! They're wonderful dogs and very trainable.
I love my Doberman but she started as a city dog then we moved to the country. She goes crazy off the leash, plus is dying to eat a chicken! I should try again to train her... I am planning to walk her where the bobcat has been hanging out.

EEEEEEE in all my years I’ve neverrrrr had a fairy egg! I have a new layer! Thank goodness, cause I have only two laying this week.

Congrats on the new layer! Im dyeing to see the eggs from our new layers but none yet! One of the pullets has developed a very nice comb and wattles, so I keep checking...

I’m checking EVERYWHERE now. I’ve seen a few Legbars that lay the MOST CRAZY saturated first egg, I really don’t want to miss it from my Opals. From combs I thought for sure they’d be before the welsummer.

It’s gonna be a race now between the Legbars and one of the meat birds I held back to see who is next. I love this time of year as it finally is going to cool off (yeah right), layers are picking up and new surprises abound!

I have a few chicken pullets that should be surprising me with first eggs soon! Just one problem I have them intermingled with the big girls so I never know for sure when they start laying.... oh well some of my girls are deep in molt. So I was hoping the new layers would help keep my egg numbers up while the old ones put on feathers....

I have pullets that i got around easter time, and they are still not layin, theyre barred rocks!
Mine are from the Easter hatch a long, and this welsummer is a couple weeks early from where I really thought they’d start.

Most of the opals from this year I’ve seen online are starting around 21-22 weeks, which is next week! :pop

Ours are 17 weeks, so probably a little young! The one whose comb is so well developed is a CCL x EE cross. This is her (Peaches and Cream! Mom is Creme Fraiche) from a month ago.
