August Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Yeah, looks like a great variety of breeds! BV is ...???

“Barnvelder”, it didn’t fit on the photo well if I typed it all out! I don’t know if it’s a correct abbreviation or not. My child labor (borrowed 7Yo that lives on the farm) is staying with her father and my Hubby sucks with my phone camera when it’s at all late (he’s tired and cranky and annoyed he had to drive down so late to look at eggs and take pictures of them so out of many, many pictures and sixty eggs later I have this masterpiece

And many more like them!:lau

So I got one decent candling pic!:

I pulled 5 eggs from my batch. 3 from the other farm 2 “dirty” and one overly round, the other two I pulled were mine by Sammy, and I’m fairly certain came from the girl who developed a prolapse about 5 or 6 days after I stopped collecting for the hatch :hmm (she’s holding it in and doing great thanks to some constant care and preparation H, but has been removed from my breeding program)

I’ve got three more questionable from the other farm and one more from Sammy’s (he only had 2 ladyfriends)

Out of the 24 I’m doing for the other guy, he has 6 to pull, but I’m going to confirm with him tomorrow then remove them, sadly all 3 of the Chantelacer (I think they are old hens and the eggs were very oblong), 1speckled Sussex, one of the two hy-lines, and one of his Barnvelder Ameraucana crosses. It’s not an incubator issue, I tend to group the questionable eggs together when I set them.

I checked the tracking number on my shipped egg's for the latest update, and it said that delivery could be late. Now usually when I have shipped egg's, I let them sit in egg carton's to rest for the air-cell's to settle. I was wondering if it would be ok to just add them to my incubator in the turner without turning the turner on for a few day's?

I hope it's okay to post here - looks like I might be interrupting a conversation :frow

Anyways, I have 7 eggs on day 21 and one has pipped!

This is my only bantam silkie from a batch of 6 eggs that has made it to hatch, and of course it's the only elongated egg I received in the order lol ah well.

Edit: second pip :) these guys will probably be hatched by the time I wake up tomorrow. I like the position of the pip on this egg better than the first egg

Unless you know for sure that things need to be changed then I suggest keeping it as you set it up. good luck.

Agreed, I left it alone. For now. :gig Hopefully it’ll work out. I have 3 more nerve trying hatches coming up over the next 2 weeks.

Btw, for anyone interested, I found this study on hatching positions and how each affects hatch.. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21934018

Good luck to all with hatches today! Fingers crossed for a happy, healthy, and plentiful hatch!

Day 21 here, no pips that I can see yet. :fl Hatching shipped eggs upright in egg cartons. First time hatching/incubating in the GQF 1502 with humidity kit. Used a Brinsea 28 before this. I miss being able to see from all sides!

Day 21 8/5
60 eggs set (36 “rare” and 24 white Silkies)
26 eggs at lockdown (25 “rare” and 1 white Silkie :rant)
Whole bunch of Saddles and messed up air cells

If all goes well, we should end up with:
Ayam Cemani
Icelandics
Isbar
White Crested Legbar
Blue Maran
Surprise color Maran
Pavlovskaya
Golden Spitzhauben
Silver Spitzhauben
...and a lone white Silkie

After this, we have another hatch on Friday—blue, splash, and buff silkies. Then again next Monday—Seramas. And yet again that Friday—1 partridge Silkie and 1 paint Silkie.:he

They probably won’t actually be late. Fingers crossed!!!

I did that last hatch and actually had better hatch rates from the group that came late and didn’t rest. In addition, my eggs from my duck hatch WERE late over a holiday weekend. I also did not rest those eggs. That was my best shipped hatch rate ever, like 80%.

On both I left them upright in the incubator for three days and then I started turning. I see a lot of people say they wait a full 7 days with shipped eggs but it makes me nervous I’ve seen multiple studies that say days 4-7 are the most important in turning.

Go go go!!!! Yay!

I have zero experience in with shipped eggs but I know I read someone else put their directly into the incubator once receive. Was it you @jolenesdad ?
