August Hatch-A-Long!

WOW! I've been gone for 2 hours and 2 more decided to make their debut. 4/10 hatched as of now and another working hard on it. I've lost track of the ones I was keeping my eye on.... they've rolled around all over the place lol

Love all the baby peep pictures!

The broodies are on lockdown--three days to go. Try telling that to Maple who jumped off her nest to go scratching around this morning. My boss didn't understand that I *had* to be 10 minutes late because I *had* to make sure she went back into the nest box. There were lives at stake, dang it LOL

I'm so mad at myself!! I had a casualty with one of my broody's eggs. I started obsessing about her being too high up in her nesting box and wanted to put her in a new nest on the ground. I didn't know if I should wait until hatching or try to get her established on the ground, so I went for it. I moved the new box in and gently lifted her from her nesting box and an egg must have been tucked under her wing because it dropped out and smashed on the floor. It held a viable day-7 chick!!! Makes me sick to think I screwed up! The good thing is she has accepted the new on-the-ground nest and has the remaining 7 eggs tucked safely under her. Sorry, poor little chick! Here are before and after pictures.

I bought hygrometer/thermometer combo at k mart for four dollars I think. The temp part wasoff a little but the humidity percent seems to work. I used a. Backup thermometer that came with bator for backup.

There are digital thermometer/hygrometer combos at most pet stores in the reptile section. There are also analog. I use Zoo-Med brand and Exo Terra brand. I double check my temps with an ifrared temp gun from Pro Exotics (online). Since I also keep and breed reptiles, I had all these things laying around anyway, but with the exception of the temp gun they are fairly inexpensive. Hope you have a better hatch next time!
