Don't be too hard on the kitten. It was just curious about the chirping I'm sure. Just today my adult cat was doing his usual morning activity of watching the chickens forage for bugs in the Chunnel. He got curious about the chickens activity and got up on the run wall to watch them from above and accidentally fell thru the edge of the netting cover down into the chicken run. At that moment he was surrounded by 9 adult chickens watching him! I worried about what my three cats would do if one of my chickens go out of the run but never thought about what would happen if one of the cats got in the run.
The tables were suddenly turned and the chickens outnumbered the cat, lol. Fortunately the chickens were use to seeing the cats laying just outside the run so they were not afraid of the cat...and therefore didn't attack him. My cat came to my bedroom window (within the run area) and cried out to me to get him out. I didn't know where the meows were coming from, certainly not thinking it was from inside the run so I didn't do anything about it, figuring he was just outside meowing at the chickens in the Chunnel. About an hour later my husband was outside and saw the cat in the run and called me to come let him out.
It was the funniest thing to see the cat hanging out in the run with all the chickens, lol. I opened the door and he came out. I honestly think he had a fun time in there. Hopefully if the tables are turned and a chicken gets out to where the cats are, they will be as kind to the chicken.
As tragic as the result was because of the curious kitty, it did not intentionally harm the chicks.
Yeah, I would have been more mad at the dog, intentianally killing a rooster is NOT acceptable. My dog did that...she was in big trouble, now once in a while she will try to play with them...but she hasn't gotten one since.
It is so wierd...my cats don't care about chicks or chickens, in fact I witnessed my young buff chasing the cat, neck feathers flared. Huh, what a wierd buff. My dog is also quite wierd..she will pick up a chick, set it down and start rolling it with her muzzle, she has never killed one though.
I've been trying to catch up on everyone's hatches. I'm sooo sorry epmchicks. Bad cat, bad, bad cat...typical cat though. I hope you recover, and try again soon.
I have a question: 8 of mine hatched on day 20, 1 hatched on day 21, and I have one left.
I was afraid it might be getting tired and needing more oxygen than it was getting. so I cut a tiny hole through the inner lining for it. As I cut I felt movement, and have been seeing it rock for 2 days now. (No peeping though.) Should I go ahead and get it out? I go out of town Fri. until Mon. evening. so if I don't get it out tomorrow, I won't have another chance until Mon. night. All the ones that have hatched have been fine, so I have no reason to think this one won't be, if it has the energy to get out, at this point.
What do you think I should do?
(They are Black-Cornish, or Marans father. Cornish & Lace-wing-? mothers.)
I would not reccomend it...Heidisgran, Sweetappleacres and I have assisted hatching and usually results in a weak tiny chick...
