August Hatch-A-Long!

the free range but not fertile must mean he doesnt have a rooster so for SURE no chicks hatching there HAS to be a rooster around to get an y fertile eggs although hens will lay anyway without a roo around.
.Ive never hatched Trader Joes myself but I think from what ive read here you could get one or 2 even but its sort of a fluke

Buying "for sure" fertile eggs make for a much better chance of hatch so 6 looking good ? that's fine
If its your first hatch the FERTILE bunch I would not throw out any that were iffy. Totally clear or a glow of light through every part of the egg...then its probably not fertile.
If you turn it in your hand maybe see dark area but at day 9 it should be a pretty big dark area Still if you see dark let it be an iffy one
I put a question mark on them with a pencil and keep them in .
Check again see if it grows in a few more days

Some ppl put a line where they see the dark area then check some days later to see if the dark area has gotten bigger
if a chicks is in there it should be bigger.

By day you 9 should see if nothing else about 1/2 or 3/4 of the egg will be dark inside.
White eggs you may see veining at day 7 and even movement Darker eggs you can but not as prominent and able to see. You may have a chick there anyway if iffy one .GOOD LUCK ALL !

I think you must have miss read me. The 'free range' that were NOT marked fertile are my 6 live eggs. The two dozen marked 'fertile' were NOT fertile.

I threw out the totally clear ones (and cracked them so I verified no life inside). The 6 that I am calling live are full of red veins and dark eye spots too.

Thanks that would be great. I am afraid if one was scrambled the others may not be on great shape either. I am in Media outside of Philadelphia
Turken dont give up!!
Shipping does a job on eggs but you may have some little babies in there yet.
Worth a shot until day 10 anyway ...see what grows.
I would set them upright in an egg carton with the holes in the bottom cut out some for air circulation unless you have a turner. Carton.... you just tilt it one one then the other later in the day.Works fine.
Yo u want them big end up to keep the air cell if its loose from shipping to be and stay in place

Hi I'm uk and have put 8 buff Sussex eggs under my broody wilma yesterday x never done this before so fingers crossed x one question my other chuck Betty is laying eggs in same nest is it oki for me to take her eggs daily from under broody wilma or should I leave alone and not have eggs for a while x HELP please x lol x
HUmm maybe someone answered you... I would mark your eggs with a pencil you want to hatch that your broody sat on first then take out any that are laid after that if you want to take them out.

I just candled even though it's only day 5 for my eggs. I just wanted to see if I could see anything. Many eggs I saw veins, some eggs I couldn't see much, and I few I even saw the eye (I swear one had a pair looking at me LOL). I put smileys on the eggs with certain good development. One egg, was stuck to the turner. Turns out it was leaking so it got removed. It was an egg I had collected on the 16th of June so it was one of the old eggs. I have one egg that's older so we'll see if it develops or deteriorates like this one. There is a little bit of dud egg goo that dripped to the bottom of the incubator that I don't know how or if I should clean up. I did dribble some water on it to dilute it but should I take the eggs, turner and wire out of the incubator to clean it all out? Will it cause a stink? Will it cause bacteria to grow in or on the styrofoam and possibly invade the eggs? Which will be worse, leaving the goo or cooling the eggs, lifting the turner and taking a chance that I break something (egg or turner or both)?

Thanks for any advice,
CG
Yeah tricky with a mess to clean and turner will it cause a stink or germs. Im not sure there.
But.taking the eggs out for a little while wont hurt them.
After all the hen gets off the nest to eat and drink.
Brinsea has a bator out now that has a cool down cycle as they claim you get 3% better hatch if the eggs cool once a day for a while .Breaking one well have to be careful.I dont use the turner sold mine I use egg cartons. You do have to tilt 3 times a day but takes seconds and easy to remove the eggs if you have to candle in a diff room like me or to clean the bator.
At day 17 I take them out usually to hatch laying down but have left them in it also .Im about 50 -50 on which is best to do

Sorry if I misread.Thats funny the non fertile were fertile and fertile werent.!! Go figure guess farmer with non fertile have a roo and just said non fertile as spome ppl don't want to eat a fertile egg..Sounds gross to them.
BUT at least you have 6 for sures veins are a for sure and black dot too. that's exciting

Yea, same with people buying the ones specifically marked fertile...there is really no difference in taste either way. I think the local farmer didn't mark his as 'fertile' because he couldn't guarantee it, but that didn't stop the factory from marking them as fertile when they obviously didn't have enough roos for the chickens laying. Guess the farmer has way more integrity than the factory...as if I didn't already suspect that.

I think I will go directly to this local farmer for future fertile eggs if this hatch becomes addictive before my own rooster becomes productive.

OK i have just come across the August hatch thread and stuck my nose in lots of ppl questions.

HOpe nobody minds.

Answered in case nobody else had as there seems to be lots of new hatchers this thread wit h questions which is what the hatch threads are for but sometimes someone is missed when asking a question. And I am on and off here every day so time to answer usually

Ive hatch for about 1 1/2 years weekly many many shipped and then my own eggs for the last 3-4 months Just 6 weeks ago m y first 2 broodys hatched their eggs. so im pretty new to that type hatch. Have my own questions there!

Ive been on BYC the whole time so being on so many hatch threads I learned a LOT from others way more experienced than myself. and boy was it helpful and saved me a lot of stress to have someone who would answer me in minutes usually before I paniced .There is so much to learn on hatching and when chicks are hatching out is the most stressful time of all.You REALLY need someone !!
anyone who hatched before knows what i mean.

Everyone will run into a need to assist a hatch eventually so read up on it for sure

My own tip..... don't assist until the chick is not making ANY progress at all in pipping or zipping for minimum 15 hours.
Everyone (including me )tends to want to help the chick out and too early can kill a chick.
Lot goes on while hatching out and it takes lots of time to do on some chicks so patience is the key

Sally Sunshine has lots of great articles on her thread everything about shipping incubating and hatching and shes very helpful t oanyone who asked

.Now my AUG hatch ..I have 3 hatches coming end of July Lavender Amercaunas ,Lavender Orps and hopefully a couple Palomino Bantam Brahmas sold the parents already so hope for a hatch or 2

AUGUST HATCH I dont have all the eggs yet... Laced Lavender Orps due this week or next. Not my choice of weather to ship in but it was a swap from April so beggars cant be choosers

So far have some Lavender Amercaunas and Lav Orps my own eggs so will be an overlapping hatch
Have some under my broodys too due in Aug.Same breeds and some mixed too im sure knowing my broodys and hens.

So good luck to all Hatchers here and I know we all will have lots of fun as usual helping each other with support and answers

So true. The farmer has to face you the factory doesnt.
OR they could just be too old too
Might have sat there in the factory too long before shipped to sell

Oh and FYI it WILL get too addictive!! FOR SURE
I have only seen one or 2 ppl in lots of hatch threads that didn't hatch at least one or 2 more times.I
its such fun to chat and commiserate with others in your same boat and share Hatch Day with others as excited. Its as exciting as the hatch itself ...that first chick..its like you feel like god..you brought a chick into the world from just a little ol EGG.
Its unexplainable.
So it all drives you to another hatch
And if someone wouldnt get any(like I didnt my first TWO hatches) it drives you to try again until you get a chick!
