I set 14 Serama eggs today and will be setting 3 Blue and Black Bantam Marans and 3 Lavender Bantam Ameraucanas in my other bator in a few days :) this will be my first unassisted hatch that is with out the hen doing all the work lol..

I was talking to an older customer (I manage an auto parts store) about it being hot and tryn build coop and pen for my chickens I hatched when he told me he had about 70 head and usually sells eggs. When I said I hatched mine in homemade bator he was surprised. Said he had commercial bator but never had any luck. Couple days later he brought me a dozen eggs to try lol I started them this past Sunday. Remember him saying RIR rooster but can't remember other breeds of hens. But they are large brown eggs. See development in some tonight

I'm back! Candled my four eggs, at least one has life! I have a really bad candler (a torch with cardboard on top) and I could hardly see inside the egg, but after close looking, I can safely say, we have a chicken! I'm not sure about the others, but I just can't see enough to be sure about no life.

23 Bantam EE eggs are officially set!

Now the waiting game...man I just set them but since this is my first hatch I'm so excited and nervous nothing will hatch. How can you all do this multiple times a year? It would kill me. lol Something tells me I'm going to be checking on them dozens of times a day if not more for the next 21-ish days...

Wow that was very nice of him to give you all those fertile eggs! Sound like you are going to have fun figuring out what all of them are when they hatch. I have a mystery hatch due too.

LOL, I am in the same boat. This is my first hatch in 30+ years and I cannot seem to stay away from the incubator. If I am away from home more than an hour I start worrying about my egss!

I candled my eggs last night and out of 30 store-bought "supposedly fertile" eggs I have 6 with live chicks-to-be in them! Woo Hoo!!

7 days ago I set approx 10 Trader Joes fertile eggs, 10 fertile eggs from an organic grocery, and 10 eggs from a local poultry breeder that were labeled 'Free-Range' but not fertile. The six live eggs are all from the local poultry breeder. They are a mix of eggs so I don't know what breeds I will get. The egg colors are a mix of dark brown, tan, green, and off-white, So this will definitely be a Mystery Hatch.

Due date of first hatch is Aug 2nd.

[Side Note: I cracked all of the eggs that were not growing and one was literally scrambled inside, the others looked okay but I could not find an fertile bulls eyes on any of them. That is why I said 'supposedly fertle' store-bought eggs.]

Yo u wont see much until about day 7 so dont disguard any yet
In fact I never candle until day 10 then again day 17 to make sure what to throw out Rather put a non fertile into lockdown than to throw out a viable baby.

the free range but not fertile must mean he doesnt have a rooster so for SURE no chicks hatching there HAS to be a rooster around to get an y fertile eggs although hens will lay anyway without a roo around.
.Ive never hatched Trader Joes myself but I think from what ive read here you could get one or 2 even but its sort of a fluke

Buying "for sure" fertile eggs make for a much better chance of hatch so 6 looking good ? that's fine
If its your first hatch the FERTILE bunch I would not throw out any that were iffy. Totally clear or a glow of light through every part of the egg...then its probably not fertile.
If you turn it in your hand maybe see dark area but at day 9 it should be a pretty big dark area Still if you see dark let it be an iffy one
I put a question mark on them with a pencil and keep them in .
Check again see if it grows in a few more days

Some ppl put a line where they see the dark area then check some days later to see if the dark area has gotten bigger
if a chicks is in there it should be bigger.

By day you 9 should see if nothing else about 1/2 or 3/4 of the egg will be dark inside.
White eggs you may see veining at day 7 and even movement Darker eggs you can but not as prominent and able to see. You may have a chick there anyway if iffy one .GOOD LUCK ALL !
