I think the few left from the other batch are not going to hatch. I haven't candled them because I added the bantam mix eggs to the one I use as my hatcher. It's one of the bantams that pipped. I was candling my other eggs when I heard a small cheep. I thought I was just wishful hearing. I ignored it until I heard it again. It's barely cracked but after my silkie eggs was supposed to hatch on the 3oth, my wyandottes on the 2nd and my bantams on 6th, and I've had nothing. I really needed something. I was about to fly out to one of your houses just to watch one hatch. It has been so long I was almost thru my withdrawl symptoms. But now I've had a taste and all is right with the world again. Well not really, but my little crazy world is happier.

Gah... here we go again. I really don't want to deal with more assists :/ But I am wondering what is going on in there again. All 3 of my pips from last night and this morning are still sitting there. Two attempted to zip and made it about 3 pecks and that is it. The other one is still just a pip. These are 2 of my Marans eggs and on of my RIW. Those are the SAME chicks I had to assist last hatch because they seemed too big for the shells. All the Australorp and Wyandottes made it out just fine.

Well, the one with just a pip was also the one that pipped first (again) so I went ahead and just pulled it out and peeled back a little outer membrane and confirmed it died on pip :( Apparently hit a big blood vessel. I can't see the beak at all so I guess it pipped and then tried to move and then bled to death :( I candled and you can see blood all along the internal edge of the membrane inside :( Poor baby - almost made it! I am goign to leave the other two a while longer since they have at least made it through some zipping. I think they are OK for now. I am going to quickly snatch on of the shipped eggs and check for an internal pip or sign of life.

I went out to purchase some rhoded island red hens that were used at a all organic egg farm (business)  Sold to big markets...beautiful place.  They were going to get new hens.   I question him many times if they were RIH  hen he said yes....   These hens were ranched on 20 fenced acres, hot wire and preditor dogs.
mIn the middle of no where.  They had 3portable laying house  to lay their eggs in..The squirrels came out to chatter at you.  Like you were invading their home.   Had to be coyetto heaven.
He had beautiful Red roosters running with the hens to keep them happy.   I was so impressed with his set up.
Anyway I took the hens 12 home  and collect all the eggs that they did lay in 7 days.   They were going into molt.. Think I had 3 dozen eggs.   Had a great hatch   so if other people raise there organic eggs that way I can see how they would hatch....
One of better deals I've made on Hens.   They are beautiful red.   Paid $3. each hen   hatch 3 dozen chicks from them 30 days after purchase.
I still have 7 of the same hens  and they lay almost very day.   I crossed them with a splash copper marans roo.   (only roo I had)  And got beautiful  blue hens  that lay really good.
This man loved his big flock of hens  and it was a great place for them.
He if the hens jumped the fence they were coyette food  but not many did.   What a place ...
one question   At the grocery store here they have some very dark brown eggs they sell as organic and almost all the same color.   Looks like they dyed them th  What color were yours you hatched.
My red hens  layed a light tan brown egg.   Even the hertiage rhode island eggs I bought from a breeder  the egg shell color was very light.
I may have to go to the store and try to hatch a dozen of those extra dark eggs.  Does anyone remember the code on the package that tells you when they were packed?
Ya got me curious now.

How cool is that! I would have loved to visit that place.

My eggs were a mix of colors, so I don't think they only have one breed of chickens. The three light colored babies came out of tan eggs, the striped one came from a brown egg, the other breech baby that died was out of a large green egg. There were some reddish brown ones and a white one too. Must be at least 4 or 5 different breeds judging by the egg colors.

The three digit code on the carton is the Julian Date code. January 1st is 001, while December 31st is 365. Today, August 7th is 219. That will tell you what date the eggs were packed, they may have been laid several days before that, but not likely for a small operation. Small organizations and local egg providers who are not egg factories may not be required to use the code, although some do. Mine did not have that code, I just new that they got a new shipment at least once a week and they looked full so I assumed it hadn't been long since the last delivery.

DH put 36 speckled sussex in lockdown this evening.  This is third hatch and hope to get some chicks in a few days.  We will see.  DH does not have a problem with staring at the chicks during hatching. The first hatch happened when he was away all day at work and than an auction.  Came home at 10PM and there were 7 fluffy chicks running around the bator.  Got the 8th when he woke up next morning. With this hatch if we get 50% success we will have alot of chicks.  The only time we had close to that is when we purchased day olds from a breeder in Georgia.

Ooh, I am looking forward to seeing those chicks because when I was trying to find chicks that looked like mine, that was one of the breeds that matched.

Hope hubby gets to see them hatch this time. :)
