August Hatch-A-Long!

So far she is doing well. We are helping her to find the food and water dishes along with supplimenting by hand feeding. She will find one of the other chicks in the brooder and put her head on their back so she can follow them around. Other than not having eyes, she appears quite healthy and strong. If she makes it, we plan on putting her in with our Silkies

Carolina, I had a rooster who was born like that.

He very quickly learned where the food and water was, as long as we didn't move it. We did keep him in his own coop with a couple of gentle hens as companions. He never had a problem with his disability, lived a long happy life. Good luck with your Polish peep!

Nothing this morning. The one on the rear right has cracked the shell but not got a hole made yet. Is that okay? And the roller looks like it's made it through to the air cell but done nothing else. But it also looks like it went through on the highest end of the air cell.

Probably ok. If they are like the quail eggs I juat hatched it'll be fine. All of them cracked the egg and about 20ish hours later sprang out of their eggs ready to take on the world lol. They never made an actual pip hole.

I posted this on another forum last night. Sorry gals I meant to be telling YOU! They couldn't answer my questions,(of course). Can you help me?
8-19-13 I got up this morning hoping I could get back from work in time to see my eggs hatch. Tomorrow is the 21st day, but I thought one might hatch late this afternoon. As I was getting ready for work I heard a loud peep! So loud it couldn't be inside an egg! Sure enough one little chick was stumbling around in the incubator, and another was trying to hatch out! At 4:30 a.m. the second one was out! At 4:45 another one had broken out, and three more were zipping! I had to go on to work, but my husband called we when he got home at 3:00 in the afternoon, and told me I had 8 chicks running around in the 'bator and another egg was just starting to peck! It is 9:14 pm and the one egg is still moving as the others have gone to sleep for the night. I had 10 eggs, so I have 80% hatch rate so far! Much better than I ever hoped for my first hatch!
I have a question: Do you start counting your incubator days when the eggs are put in the incubator, or when they were layed? You see, I collected 4 eggs, on a Sunday, then had to go out of town, so we kept these in a cooler as near 55% as we could, until I returned. The next day my DH added 3 more eggs to the cooler. On the third day, (Tues) I got home and added 3 more eggs that I collected that day, put all of them in the incubator and started it. (10 eggs total.)
I started my counting on the day I started the incubator. Tomorrow is the 21st day, yet all but 2 eggs have already hatched. This makes me wonder if the 2 that haven't hatched are from the last 3 collected eggs, (meaning one of them is 3 days premature! Anyone have an opinion on this?
Oh, I have another question: I know a brooding hen doesn't lay eggs, but do they lay one the day after they start brooding, or do they stop the day they start setting? Just wondering how many eggs are under my hen that started setting, 1 or 2. we have given her one other egg a day from another hen, for the past 3 days. Do you think they will hatch one a day after her first one...on day 22, 23 and 24? or all on the same day?
This is sooo interesting! I had never seen an egg hatch or new born chicks until today!
<9:53 pm~Going to check and see how the zipping one is doing. maybe I can see one hatch...Nope. Still just a tinny peck showing. The other chicks are bumping and stumbling around him. If he isn't out tomorrow should I help him, or give him another day or two?(Back to my
counting question.) humm>
7:38 am He still hasn't hatched. I think I need to assist, so he can get more oxygen. Sterile gloves,"Surgery time." any comments welcomed.
Thank you for the team support! Hope you eggs are all hatching soon too!

Carolinahen: I think she should be alright...

my polish has a crest that totally covers her eyes and she is fine, although not as aware of her surroundings...

I think she will be OK as long as her eyes are her only issue. We have an area set up for some of our Silkies that is covered. I really hope she makes it because she is super sweet! I know a lot of people would say to cull her....... I just can't see culling if she is otherwise healthy.

Thanks so much for sharing!! He is beautiful :)

my hubby and I believe one of our little lavender Americanas is blind...it doesn't hardly open it's eyes and when it does they are slits...it just mostly lays...it follows the chirps of the other 4 to try and snuggle but doesn't peck at the food...I've been giving it electrolytes but it's waning...sweet little doll

I've had 2 like that. I put warm water on a soft cloth and held it against the eyes. Then I but a bit of antibaterial oinment on a qtip and put it around the eyes. I had to do this several times a day until the eyes stopped closing. I don't know if this is what made it better for sure but one is fine now and the other seems to be but it's only been a week.
DeannaA after seeing your hatching chart I can see you are deffinatly a very keen poultry enthusiast. Also how many chickens do you have and how many different breeds.
1- Light Brahma, 1- Black FCM, 1- Splash Marans, 1-RIR, 1- Marans X BO, 1- Silkie, 1- Seram Frizzle?, 2- Mille Fleur D'uccle, 2- Ameraucanas, 2- Black Australorps, 2- Buff Orpingtons, 5- Barred Rock (raising for a friend), 11- Easter Eggers
The oldest are almost 5 months. Youngest were free with a bag of feed, 5 days.

In the incubator- Red Star X Salmon Faverolle, Black Australorp, BO, Serama, Silkie, Frizzle Cochin Bantam, Bantam Mix, EE, Croad Langshan, Crested Cream Legbar, Ameraucana, Red Golden Pheasant, Mille Fleur, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Silver Laced Wyandotte, LF Cochin, FCM, RIR Some I only have 2 or 3 of. Most of these I bought because it's all I could get locally. The Croad Langshans, FCM, Crested Cream Legbars and Silkies are the well bred ones.
I've done that and found hatched dry chicks in the incubator...when my granddaughter was here she would put eggs in randomly...

...talk about a staggered hatch!
All of my eggs are numbered and I keep track of the days. I keep them grouped by when they were started. I move them to a seperate incubator for lockdown. I have 4. Never had a surprise but I haven't been doing it long. I am still figuring it all out.

I count day 1 as the day AFTER I put mine in. Not sure about anyone else. Maybe your bator was running a little warmer than you thought or maybe it was warm enough outside before you collected the eggs that they started developing before you even put them in.

Anywho Congratulations on your hatch and Good Luck with the assist!

The back right one has a nice chunk of shell it's got opening up. These two are chirping up a storm in there. My roller is no longer rolling. Should I be worried since it was so active yesterday evening?
HI,
Your good, little one likely taking a nap.....hatching is very hard work for them...............
big_smile.png

So they will work then rest , work then rest.

I meant the part where you went to move them and they were already chirping...I didn't label the eggs she stuck in...I have 4 incubators she picked up eggs from the coop and set them in there and grammy found out when she went back to California lol

Lol....I sometimes sneak a few eggs in on my dad.... Although, I do most of the incubating stuff... I added a double Yoker the other day and another EE, only two days after orriginal hatch though :)
