August Hatch-A-Long

You bet...WELCOME!!!

and Yikes...you have a lot going on there!! But here is something to remember..when your first eggs start hatching and you let those babies dry and fluff in the incubator, they really knock those other eggs around so although it is not precise turning they do get moved around by the hatchlings! I have had a staggered hatch where they were due a week apart and I just got in quickly to turn the ones that needed and it seemed to work out ok for both hatches. Good luck with your Peeps due tomorrow

and remind hubby that broodies don't follow any directions...LOL...so it will be ok! Rule followers

From my understanding the turning is more critical in the earlier stages. Closer they are to hatch, less critical.

I agree - new hatchling football will keep the others moving!

I plan to do the same.

Just a suggestion for staggered hatches, since I often find myself doing them (though not this time, thank goodness). I put the later eggs in an egg carton and prop one end or the other. It saves a TON of time, which is good when you've got eggs that need humidity. I just pop into the Bator super quick and switch my prop from one end to the other and temp and humidity don't change much, and what little I loose from opening the lid is quickly recovered.

Good luck everyone, and welcome to everyone who's joined recently!

I wanna candle SO, SO BAD, but I'm only on like day 3, so for now I'm sitting on my hands....literally! My husbands even hidden the flashlight from me until day 7 :gig

Good suggestion with the egg carton and we all feel your pain of having to wait.

I put the newer eggs that need turning for sure in the egg cartons, I just put a piece of folded cardboard on one side and prop them one side to the other that way, goes quickly!

This is the set up now:

Egg carton ones on the left are due 8/11 and ones on the right are due 8/13 I pulled about half the dark eggs in the middle for being clear and one for smelling funny a few days ago so there are less eggs now than in that photo. Most all the middle eggs are due tomorrow with the exception of three maran eggs I foolishly stuck in there at a later date and didn't label!

In happy news, one of the potential sizzle eggs was rocking and chirping like crazy and pipped right infront of husband and I. Made me squeee with delight and husband says he is very happy we got into chickens. LOL

We had hatched for 4 years as homeschool projects but never could keep the chicks and ducklings as we lived on a military post. We now live in the country and we can keep some chickens and eggs and sell the others! We love hatching. Not sure we love staggered hatching though LOL

Thank you all for the help!

(P.S.) With egg cartons for the newer eggs the hatchling football shouldn't entertain them much I am thinking?

Congrats your babies are on the way!!!! School is actually how I started hatching too. Every spring I hatch quails, chicks and ducks in my classroom. Last year I finally kept 2 when I hatched out Bantams

They are so much fun and my hubby loves them as well! This is the first time I am hatching at home so he actually gets to see the process and is pretty excited! He helped me candle for the first time! And no hatchling football for the carton eggs...but they will knock around their hatchmates due at the same time...LOL

The sun is out on this cold winters day, and I'll be picking up an incubator this afternoon to see if I can give the cracked egg we have a better chance of surviving. I've not used one before. So nerve wracking. Is it right to also pick up a thermometer/hydrometer for better accuracy? Fingers crossed for the baby in the egg labelled "12". Have a lovely Sunday, hatch-a-long friends. :)

Yes, I would pick one up with your incubator

Well, today I set 12 more eggs. 4 Olive Eggers (Blue Wheaten Ameraucana over Welsummer), and 8 Easter Eggers (Wheaten Ameraucana over Barred Rock or over Easter Egger). Chicks are due Aug 16th. This is my third hatch (and final?) this year.
