August Hatch-A-Long

Matt98- if you don't see any veins or blobs, you should probably pitch them. You could wait another couple of days and look at them again, and toss them if they're still the same.
Exploding eggs usually give some sign before they go all crazy. You'll usually see them leaking or notice a funky smell before they go off. Good luck!

Movement!!! We saw 3 little bouncing dark blobs of joy. Eggs #5, 15, & 12. I have no idea what kind of eggs they are, except #12 is an assorted bantam. (PLEASE BE A BUFF ORPINGTON AND A BLACK AUSTRALORP HEN, & MY LITTLE HEART'S DESIRE - A MILLE DE FLEUR D' UCCLE BANTAM HEN, PLEASE OH PLEASE) It was so amazing!! Lol, i acted like i was having an ultrasound. DH only poked fun at me a little bit

. I could clearly see veins in 2 other eggs (UM, A BARRED ROCK & SPECKLED SUSSEX WWWOOUUULLLDD BE NICE, TOO). So I think 5 out of 16 are alive. The other asstd. Bantam egg had the only definitely detached air cell, & what looked like a bloody blob fall from the side to the bottom when i turned it on its side. There also was what appeared to be a dark little dead chick in it which didn't move. 3 of the ones i didn't see anything promising in look like they might be starting the dreaded red ring of death. The remaining 7 looked clear, i couldn't identify an air cell in 4 of those. I know these #s aren't good, but it's far better than i thought it would be...can't wait for day 10 candle!!! LOL I made all the kids & their friends come in to watch the moving embryos bounce around. This seriously felt like Christmas morning.
Yay!!!! I had the same thing!!! I just candled and had at least 3 bouncing around...lol It made me so nervous but excited....silly me thought I was just going to be looking for veins....never thought they would be moving

.....you did better than me on keeping track...I marked them all but don't remember exactly about the others and was just so nervous when I saw some moving I was just in a hurry to put them back safely

.....Good luck to all!

14 down and 12 more to do in a couple days!

Hooray! I'm glad everyone's candling is going well! I'll be candling mine tonight (day 7) when it's dark in my kitchen. About half of my eggs are blue or green which can make them really hard to see inside. I'm expecting to mark a bunch as "maybes" that will need to be rechecked around day 10.

I'm in....set one mix group....experiment last week. This is actually day 8 does anyone know when we can hear a heartbeat with a stethoscope? I will be setting more eggs this week.
Welcome! I don't know the answer to your question, but am very excited to have you join us & find out when you can hear them. You are so lucky to have an experienced candler for a husband. At our house, we were all unsure about everything until we saw the 1st one move

. Now I understand why candling is so addictive...

How many eggs are in your group? Is this your first incubation attempt?

I forgot to update! I candles the other day, on day 7 (yeah, I made it)! Only 9 of my eggs passed the test

All of them are from my Silkies though, so that makes me happy! I'm already collecting up another batch of eggs to go in the incubator, so I'll probably be sticking around for a while

Hooray! I love Silkies! I mean, I've never actually seen one in person, but I am so in love with them on the internet, LOL. What was the breed that didn't make it? Did you pull them already, or are you waiting until day 10?

Isn't it awesome??? I never expected this to be such an emotional experience...I'm totally gaga over my little bouncing blobs now...I just had a vague feeling of dread until I saw #5 move. What kind did you candle last night? What kind will you be looking at in a few days?

All of my eggs are blue laced red wyandottes! I'm going to take much better notes next time I candle...lol At least now I have seen a couple... all my eggs are brown with spots so I had a hard time seeing the veins but not hard to miss the bouncing ones!!! I think I only have one with a detached air cell and maybe one with a blood ring...all others I have no idea lol

I have 2 of the 4 eggs in the hatcher pipping externally. I didn't keep track of the date I set them but just judge by candling when to move them. I moved them 4 days ago.

I have another 63 eggs in the incubator at various stages of development. Some are due in 6 days.

They're all Black Penedesencas.
