August Hatch-A-Long

That's so cool you got a surprise early! Do you know what kind it is? It is scary mixing different sized chicks, my sister did it with disastrous results

.

No, I am pretty sure it's dad is my Welsummer as the Crested Polish rooster's chicks seem to always have a Mohawk. Any one of my hens could be it's mother, probably excepting my Cornish cross hen. I think she would throw yellow chicks or yellow chicks with black spots. Otherwise I have a red production, 3 EE's and a black hen that we thought was an Australorp but I don't think so now. I think any of these 5 could be it's mother.

Yeah, I know. One of the now older chicks got picked on by one of the hatchlings born before them. Same chick picking on the same chick. Every time I put the younger ones in with the older ones. It was like the older chick could recognize this chick or the smell of this particular chick. I had to keep them separate.

Nothing much to report here, other than I'm resisting the urge to candle already! My incubator has been holding steady and I've been hand turning 3 times a day.

Luckily I have to work today, so I can stay away from the Bator for a little while, but I get off at 11am, so I'll probably end up candling when I get home just to see what I can see :p

Glad to see everyone's doing okay!

did you decide if you'll put your 2nd batch in the bator right away, or let them rest 1st? I'm sorry, i wish i knew some good advice to give you but i am brand new to all of this...
Hi! I'm trying to be very patient which isn't easy! I'm going to wait the 24hr...should be able to put in the bator in about 4 hr

....should be a good time since yesterday around that time my temp was a couple degrees warmer so it shouldn't be too bad to get in the bator...day 1 my temp stayed mainly at 100, but did go to 102 for a couple hrs and then when I woke up it was at 99... not great but still going to give it another day...don't really want to mess with the knob for temp. My humidity has ranged from 41 to 51 %.... I think its ok...might try getting humidity up a little. I'll just be glad to get all the eggs in the bator and have a couple days go by and know the temp and humidity doesn't change to much. Hope your eggs are doing good

I just finished candling my eggs!!! I have 29 out of 34! 5 were duds, no development at all in 4 of them and the other one barely had any murk to it.

ALL OF THE OTHERS HAD MOVEMENT!!! I have never had so many eggs with so much movement at one time! Well, that I could see. LOL

I have12 silkie eggs and 16 of my mixed breeds eggs. I had a surprise baby hatch today and he's doing ok right now. He didn't like it that I turned all the lights out so I could candle the eggs. He hollered and screamed. LOL

I left out some details. LOL They are 15 days in the incubator and are due for hatching on 7/31
How exciting!!! I have never done this so sorry for silly question but does a chick hatching that early happen on a regular basis? I'm a nervous wreck and I'm not normally like this...so many unknown things...lol Hopefully in a couple weeks I will be more relaxed

I'm also curious as to what your temp and humidity have been at and if you have still air or not? Good luck to all your chicks

Yeah to all the wigglers out there! Candled last night but was so late and so tired that I didn't get all the posts in that I wanted. I have 55 left in the bator. About a dozen of those are simply hopefuls as they were too dark for me to see. I am very dissapointed with my silkie ratio. Pulled 13/17 eggs. I believe the greeder said he had a new roo so I plan to report that his roo isn't working hard enough. I can't complain too much because the eggs were free, if I had paid I would be upset

Here is a pic.

Ok....so I put eggs in 1 1/2 hrs early...haha I couldn't stand it! So now for time to go by. My hatches are officially one day and 21 hrs apart

, but they are in and hopefully making chicks

Yippee!!! 3 out of 5 on shipped eggs is a good #, isn't it usually around 50%? Plus, you never know, the egg with the red streak may end up fine...what a great candle day! This was your 7 day candle, right?
Yes, I thought so too
smile.png
I'm not giving up on the other two yet...two early yet! And yes, I candled on day 7
smile.png
You really can't tell much before then and I am not to experienced so I candle day 7, 14 and before lockdown. Its so hard not to touch and candle more and I have been known to cheat and candle more often

but really it is best to limit how much you handle the eggs! My next 8 I put 2 in the bator and 6 under my broody so she will keep my hands off her eggs for sure!

Hi! I have still air and I keep the temp at 100 and humidity between 45-50%. Humidity does fluctuate a bit, but as long as it doesn't go up or down too much its ok!

LOL...YAY!

Waiting is the hardest thing EVER!!!

Chicks tend to hatch early or late so having hatch dates a day or two apart shouldn't be a problem! Now you get to candle at day 7 and see how they are doing!
