August Hatch-A-Long

Hey everyone, I have a broody speckled sussex sitting on 4 eggs. This is my first time ever hatching eggs! I am so excited. I wasn't really sure she was broody at first so I am not sure what day development wise it is. My guess is they are between 12 and 15 days. Is it ok to candle them at this point? I haven't had a light to do this until today or I would have done it sooner...

Just wanted to share. This is Dottie, my mottled Cochin. She's sitting on 6 Silkie/Sizzle eggs. This is her first time and she's doing a wonderful job so far! I think one of my Silkie hens is also going broody, it's a good thing I like baby chicks!

We have had 8 out of 12 eggs hatch so far. Two of the eggs will not have any chance of hatching and two have movement inside. 66% so far is not bad on first hatching.
Congrats! 66% isn't bad at all

I did finally candle my eggs the other night. I just never got around to posting the results. I'm still unsure of a few of my blue and green eggs. I had 11 definite duds that I pulled out. I'm incubating eggs from fairly new layers, so that doesn't really surprise me. It looks like I have a 1-2 girls that haven't gotten friendly with the boys yet. I keep eyeing my extra eggs on the counter and the extra space in my incubator... but staggering my hatches that much would be bad.. so I'd have to set up one of my other incubators to use as a hatcher.. and if I'm going to have to set up a second incubator, it would just make more sense to fill it with all 4 dozen eggs that are sitting on my counter, right??

Welcome! I would candle them and remove any clears/quitters to make more room for eggs that are developing. Best of luck!

We have just two golden wayndottes and both are hens. When my wife starts her breeding program, she will be looking for more.
I love my wyandottes but just getting into it. I have the blue laced red but really would like to have a breeding pair of black wyandottes.
