August Hatch-A-Long

Really, the best thing is to leave the house for 12 hour stretches. The stress of "WHY ISN'T IT HATCHING FASTER" drives me batty. I worry, I want to intervene, I know I shouldn't, I have to yell at myself, and leave the room.

Also, since it sounds like this is your first hatch, I would highly recommend reading through the assisted hatch article a few times to help keep your fingers out of the incubator.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching

Also, after reading through the article many times, I am much better at understanding how much I can meddle without actually killing the chick. And I REALLY have problems keeping myself from meddling.

I uploaded a few pics to the imgur site you can click on the links to see them.

Just kidding! I purposely had my heat a little high on this last hatch... around 100 to 101 and so they hatched late on day 20... early morning 21... like 3 am early. With temp at 99.5 they will probably mostly hatch on day 21. Days 21 and 22 might be best... there might not be much to see day 20. and then you will have time to play with and watch over the new babies!
X2 on the sudden sickness....been known to go around in hatching households...LOL! I actually have called out of work when chickies are hatching

@ Calichicken, You can usually find me hovering over the chips and dip myself. Thanks for the congrats, just hoping that the other 8 eggs pip tomorrow. I think the first baby is a roo, which is OK. I'm calling the second one a pullet, even though she hasn't emerged yet.

I got it, I got it! It is so cute too... needs a little clean up but it is a cute little cedar house with cedar shingles and a little nest box on the side. It came with a run, it really is nice. the trick was trying to get the house off and the run on top of my car ; ) My son and I did it.. still not sure how!!

It is so funny because I was really needing another heat lamp and almost went and bought one yesterday.. there was a practically new heat lamp inside the coop with a couple feeders and then in the yard was just the top part of a waterer like one I have. On mine the base is fine but the top was broken so it was a perfect replacement. This sort of thing has happened to me before where a bunch of things I need/want come to me all at once!

I'll post a pic when I get the run off my car!

And... I have a trembling egg! Come on little Serama!
Wow!! How awesome!! So happy for you! If I just had a truck I could do a lot more...I can't get anything on the top of my car. I found a great chick house for $20 and some other coops I would love to get for $50 but no way to transport

. So glad you got yours home!

Well, the remainder of my eggs didn't hatch, they all were dead. Fully formed and everything but they were not in the proper position to pip internally :( Yeah, I dissected them all, so interesting to see them completely enclosed within the membrane! I'm wondering if it's due to me moving them on Friday(lockdown day). Maybe that could have effected their positioning? The eggs with twins in it did indeed have twins. One chick was pretty much fully formed but the other one was funky looking...I should have taken pictures. Neat stuff. So although I only successfully hatched three chicks I'm happy! I also have some partridge brahmas arriving at my post office today so my little ones will have lots of friends :)

Congrats on the three chicks!! Sorry about the other eggs. My hatch did about the same. Did you do a dry hatch and were your eggs shipped? Also did you lay your eggs down or leave in carton? I'm trying to learn the different ways and outcomes...lol I'm sure you could have everything the same and still have different outcomes but just interested to know! Enjoy your chicks

Thanks, they are cute little fuzzers!!!!! I did a dry hatch...humidity was at 65% for hatching. I left the eggs in the carton but I'm thinking maybe next time I won't do that. The eggs came from a local livestock auction so they weren't shipped. Hopefully we both get better hatch rates next time!
