August Hatch-A-Long

Thanks, they are cute little fuzzers!!!!! I did a dry hatch...humidity was at 65% for hatching. I left the eggs in the carton but I'm thinking maybe next time I won't do that. The eggs came from a local livestock auction so they weren't shipped. Hopefully we both get better hatch rates next time!
lol well...I hope we get better.. I had some humidity issues and really was hoping a dry hatch would be the fix! I also thought I would leave my eggs in a carton since I had laid mine down and was wondering about the first chick that played football with the others, maybe that was a problem for getting out. I guess I will just see how things progress. I just put 27 in the incubator!!!! I have a better feeling about these. Good luck on your hatch!!

Wow!! How awesome!! So happy for you! If I just had a truck I could do a lot more...I can't get anything on the top of my car. I found a great chick house for $20 and some other coops I would love to get for $50 but no way to transport

. So glad you got yours home!

I wasn't sure how to do it because I don't have a rack on this car, but I had to go to home depot to get a pry bar cause I left mine at home and I bought tie down straps for 3.49 each and put them over the coop and through the windows!! They tighten down and were really secure. I was amazed. So now I know I can tie most anything to the top! The hard part was getting it up there!

Trembling egg has internally pipped!

Well, the remainder of my eggs didn't hatch, they all were dead. Fully formed and everything but they were not in the proper position to pip internally :(  Yeah, I dissected them all, so interesting to see them completely enclosed within the membrane! I'm wondering if it's due to me moving them on Friday(lockdown day). Maybe that could have effected their positioning? The eggs with twins in it did indeed have twins. One chick was pretty much fully formed but the other one was funky looking...I should have taken pictures. Neat stuff. So although I only successfully hatched three chicks I'm happy! I also have some partridge brahmas arriving at my post office today so my little ones will have lots of friends :)

From what I understand, if you don't rotate the eggs enough, then malpositioning is more common.

You CAN rotate the enough if they are standing up in egg cartons, it is just different.

I think that they hatch better when standing up. My only loss due to standing up was when I had quail eggs in an egg carton, and the quail pipped way too low (malpositioned), so couldn't get out.

Standing up the eggs is almost mandatory with shipped eggs, since the air cell is usually detached. By standing them up, you force the air cell to stay where it is supposed to.

With local eggs, I don't think it matters if you incubate them standing up or not.

Interesting. I was hand turning..... Maybe I need to invest in an actual turner.

Well I had a turner...lol I will say, I didn't turn it on for the first 5 days since they were shipped with bad detached air cells...other experienced people recommend not to turn for 5 days on shipped eggs. Maybe I should have plugged in turner sooner. I will say these second groups of eggs that I just put in bator, only 2 had detached air cells so maybe I should plug in turner. I think I will let them stand for another day or two and maybe just not go 5 days.

I tried to not turn my shipped eggs for 5 day but I couldn't do it! I started turning them once a day on day 3 I think. Now I am up to twice a day : )
