This is the coop I got for free on craigslist! This is the craigslist photo. It is all cedar and has a nest box on the other side. My back is not in the best shape after getting this thing home... but it was totally worth it! It is cuter than it looks in the photo! I'm putting it in my garden : ) It will be crazy cute with a bunch of Seramas in it!
With mine, I was advised to shift slightly for the first 5 days...not a full rotation just maybe a quarter turn back and forth. But then again, my shipped eggs didn't hatch either so not sure if this mattered
I think the mail may have been to rough on mine because I had one broken egg and they were packed really well!
lol Well, I didn't mess with mine at all but I still am not sure that was the problem. Although maybe had to do with malpositioning. I think from humidity mine were just to big to get out
. I am going to plug in turner today. I'm not worried about the air cells on this group, all looked great but 2 or 3, and I think they will be ok by hatch. Only time will tell
Thank you so much! In time maybe I can get a scale and a better bator. I'm going to do my best! My temp stayed great last hatch so we will see how it does this time
Sometimes, chicks aren't meant to hatch and don't without help, even under a broody.
Unless I'm sure the chicks problem is my fault, I don't help.
Here's one I helped with a third 6-toed leg growing out of its tail.
It's just my philosophy but I think if I help chicks that weren't meant to hatch, in several generations, the percentage of those that need helping will go up.
I think one of my chicks has splayed legs... it is kind of hard to tell what is up with him... hope it's splayed legs because I have his legs taped now and put him in a little box so he has to sit on his legs correctly. Other than that he seems like a strong chick so I hope he doesn't have a more serious problem. His brooder mate wants to peck at him so I have him in a safe spot.

My last chick has one bad leg but its getting better and he can get around fine. I was going to tape it but I feel like it was higher up, it had its leg up over its head in the egg. No body picks on him and they all get along and sleep together. The chick will be just a pet or dinner for someone since I believe it has a single comb

It was pretty lively but couldn't get off of its back. You may also see the left foot balled up. I was never going to breed it and the amount of time it would have taken to attempt to fix the one foot was too much. And it may never have walked anyway so I put it down. It's frozen right now waiting to see if the vet school wants it. Probably not. Huge hatcheries get 3 and 4 legged chicks from time to time so it's probably not that rare.
