August Hatch-A-Long

I am happy to report that 2 out of my 11 chicks have made it. Sadly about 30 min ago I was so excited one of my other silkies was hatching he zipped nearly all the way around in about 2 hours, but got really active the last 10. I went to take a shower hoping to come back to a new chick and it had died right in the shell. I got my fiancé to confirm and he told me it was for sure dead.. Does any one know what could have happened? He doesn't appear to be stuck to the membrane. And I'm having a hard time deciding what to do with his poor little body but I have to get rid of it so it doesn't begin to stink or become a bigger problem to the other chicks. My fiancé had to go to bed but since its 2 am I don't know what to do with him until the morning.

So upset

its now day 25 and nothing else is happening with my other eggs. I'm very discouraged and I feel like its all my fault for not double checking the temps in the begging I just believed the little giant was correct and followed the instructions

awww...so sorry but sometimes it just happens

If the chick is not too strong or healthy all its energy is used hatching and even though they make it out, they are not strong enough to survive

I bury mine and unfortunately had to do so with 2 of my chicks that hatched

Just remember that hatching is always a learning process and each time you have a little more knowledge and experience to work with

Enjoy your babies!!!!

We are offically on day 24. I did the water test and none of them wiggled. The egg that pipped last night and smelled today was dead so we got rid of that egg. Is it safe to say the others are dead as well?

Unfortunately I would say yes, they are probably not going to hatch if they did not wiggle and you are not seeing any signs of hatching

If I have had issues with low temp then I usually give mine 2-4 days after the hatch date before I take them out. If you are willing, you can always open up an eggs and see what happened. I personally have never done it but would maybe give some insight into when they stopped developing

that's what I figured. I will be taking them out tomorrow cleaning out the bator and setting another batch this week. I am calibrating my thermometers just to make sure it wasn't a faulty thermometer read.

I had the same thing happen with a batch of ducks I was hatching in my classroom

I had never had a problem with my thermometer and it never even occurred to me that this was the issue. Imagine how silly I felt when the lady at the feed store asked if I had checked my thermometer to make sure it was a true reading

But with each hatch you learn a little more

Well calibrated both, the one if off a degree ( read 1 degree warmer) the other is spot on. So that wasn't the issue. Next I have to make sure the humidity was reading correctly. I'd be happy with one chicken hatched at this point. But i highly doubt that is going to happen. Oh well, it was a learning experience. I can't wait to clean out the bator tomorrow, the living room stinks now. I hope the next hatch goes over better :)

I opened all the eggs except for the one that pipped- it would have to be fully developed to pip I only had 1 fully developed that didn't have any yolk left so not sure what happened. It was the SSxRSL mix. had two that still had some yollk left one ws a fukll SS one was a SSxRSL mix. one was nothing but a mess, couldnt even find the baby but there was lots of blood so erlg quitter i guess. and one looked like to be maybe 12 dys old. not sure what i can do different this time but calibrated thermometers about to do humidity reader aclening out the bator and setting eggs tomorrow night..

My four fuzzy butts that hatched this past weekend. One barred rock, one blue andalusian, one blue splash andalusian, and a blue andalusian/RIR cross. I still have 5 eggs in the bator due tomorrow and thursday, but im not confident they will hatch. We shall see.
