August Hatch-A-Long

I've never had a case of fowl pox, but I've read its highly contagious. So, I would think she could pass it on to any birds that come in contact with her.

Well, I woke up to one chick in the incubator this morning, so I guess I didn't cook them! At least one other egg is pipped too. Hopefully most of them hatch, I was feeling really terrible about the temp getting so high!
Yay!! So glad they are hatching! My temp did they same thing after I candled on day 14. It said 104 but couldn't have been for even an hr. Now I'm a little concerned its low..

Staying rt at 99 but I'm not touching it. I will find out Monday when I put them on lockdown who is doing good and then see who hatches!! Good luck hatching!

Thanks and Good luck once again

Yes your hen will most probably pass it on to her chicks! It happened to me but luckily all the chicks made it! Oh and my chicks were only 2 days old when they got it...

Phew! That gives me hope and another reason I love BYC.

Since your high temp was brief I wouldn't be too concerned. And a little lower in temp usually just means possibly hatching a little later but hasn't really caused them not to hatch for me...hopefully the same for you

Good Luck!!!

Thank you so much for the encouragement!! I was hoping I was thinking the rt way....lol Tomorrow is lockdown and I will take a look and see if any movement and mark there air sacs!! I will update after. Thank you and good luck to all!

It has been a week and a half since our last hatching of the 80 eggs that were set. We had 51 hatch and of that 49 lived. We have separated one of our roosters and 11 hens to get our first home grown eggs. We will start them on 9-21-14 regardless of how many eggs are laid between last week and the 21st.

I am doing the dry incubation. I don't ad any water until day 18. I am setting up my hatching incubator since I have two batches in one incubator 10 days a part I will transport the eggs to that hatching incubator on day 18. Mt question is what is the humidity levels on lock down for dry methods? They have been mid-low 20's since we started and about 3 days were 16-18% would 50% be okay? My last hatch I didn't have any hatch as my temperature was off and I basically baked them when I switched thermometers. But this time around everything is calibrated and I know how much everything is off by. I don't want to give them too much of a shock from going to 20% to 50% in one move, either. All input in appreciated!

I have never heard of using the "Dry" method so I can not help?

Well I was hoping someone with more knowledge would respond but I can say I did a dry hatch last time and had 6 hatch. I'm thinking you are doing right with humidity around 50 for lockdown. I had mine too high, which I didn't know, and it was around 70. I did have chicks but they were sticky. Please let me know how you do since I'm still learning and will be hatching again at some point! Good luck!!

The humidity is highly dependent upon one's climate. I add water 2 or 3 times during incubation and take it quite high at hatching. It works for me but perhaps not you.

Weighing eggs, to me, is the most accurate since I find calibrating hygrometers to be tedious and how does one accommodate for the difference in more or less porous eggs?

I've been told that weighing eggs is the best but just for knowledge, maybe stupid question, but what happens when some eggs within the hatch do different with weights? Or does that not happen. Just was thinking if you had some loose a lot and some didn't how would you rate what to do as a whole? Just a thought. I'm learning more that like you said its all about the bator, the outside temp/humidity as much as inside temp/humidity, shipped or not and probably much more....lol
