Augusta Maine Poultry/ Farm swap April 28th TSC

Quick question: The Comet pullets hubby bought are outside now, weather dependant, but they don't seem very active or very interested in grass. They hang out in the coop, roosting, or in a puddle of feathers somewhere, again, mostly indoors. Is this normal?? Thermometer says 65 but it is windy... am I torturing them?

Depends on where you got them from and what age they are. If they aren't used to being out of a cage, they won't be interested in much until they get used to it. If they're younger than 4 weeks old they might be a bit too chilly with the wind. I've got my 3 week olds in the basement where it's about 60 and they've been off the heat lamp since Sunday, but there's no wind. They only huddle at night to sleep.

Otherwise, they should be active soon.

Okay, thank you. These are about 8 weeks now and they are fully feathered. They hang in the basement on days like today where the wind is killer but we had two really nice days so I moved them out and then back in at night because the lows were pretty low. I wondered if they just weren't used to outside because they would walk around without pecking much and then when they found a door they would go in and roost. I plan to weatherize the coop a bit better-- old coop, over the summer, but for now I don't trust having anything but adults in there... which are coming this weekend! I am being thrown and trying to learn to swim. eek.

I did my final sort for the swap.
I will have black orpington pullets and cockerals, blue laced red wyandottes p&c, 2 cuckoo wyandottes- all are 8-12 weeks old. plus hatching eggs from the silkies and sizzle with a paint roo covering. should have 12 birds total. if anyone wants anything reserved, contact me by pm, I'll check tonight and will hold only until 9:30am.

At 8 weeks they should be fine at the temps we have but just getting "used" to not being warm and protected. I've got a couple of 11ish weeks that are sleeping outside in an open (wire) coop. I would only worry in winter when it's below freezing for large periods of time.

So My softball game got rained out today, so they resceduled it!! FOR TOMORROW AT 12:00!!! So I guess I wont be able to stick around at the swap, but I can swing by and maybe pick up some stuff! Hopefully I can go!

Anybody else know what they're bringing? My husband will kill me if I bring home anymore chickens right now . Iv'e got 3 different sets going now. Six 8 wk olds, Two 16 wk olds , and 9 hens at lay. Once they're all living together in the same pen, it will be easier to add one here or there without being obvious. lol In the meantime I'm still looking for other livestock. Baby goats, piglets, pony? Alpaca? lol .........Whatch got?

everyone have a good time at the swap tommorow.. i cant make this one either. on a good note i go back to work on monday after a seems like long six week layoff.
