Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Wow, I completely forgot to tell you all.

Well the vets gave me basically the same stuff as what you suggested, with the main ingredient being that Oxytet stuff.
So he has to go on it for 5 days (on day 2 now) and then she gave me some probiotic mix to bring back up to full health after the Oxytet. It's 'supposed' to be more than just Yoghurt so I decided to get it.lol.
At the start he had discharge from nose, eyes and mouth and lots of sneezing. Now he is only got snot coming out of one nostril and sneezing. So a bit of an improvement.

Glad he is starting to improve for you :) I'm pleased to say none of my other pekins have showed any signs of illness since i lost the other one as well.

One side affect of the medicine I'm using now is that the egg with holding period is 2 months, which is sort of what I expected, but something I didn't know/ didn't expect was that I can't use any eggs from hens that have been mated by a rooster on the medicine! I thought that was quite interesting. Have you heard of that before?

Lucas with a lot of these drugs they haven't had any studies in use with poultry so the vet has to cover themselves. Look at the medicine chart for possible side affects. Remember too that in the USA the poultry industry seems a little more proactive . I personally find cephalexin and doxycycline to work in most infections and not just for chooks. What is the actual name of the drug you are using?

I didn't like this thumper at first but he has sort of grown on me.
Roosters with feathered feet always remind be of a rabbit?!?!?
Luke - I didn't like my Leghorn crosses at first either & they have also grown on me. The were bossy, unfriendly and stuck together. The pecking order has changed & the shyest one is now one of the friendliest (& most picked on) pullets. As much as I prefer the 'traditional' fat chicken shape it is also nice to know that some of my chooks are going to handle the summer heat a bit better. Good to hear that your rooster is on the mend!

@Satay, I'm next door to Burpengary and it didn't feel that cold this morning. The sun is blazing & it's barely chilly now.

However, the granite belt is on my list of places to visit in summer because I read an article that said it has zero humidity! That sounds wonderful!

Well that's good to know you weren't so cold.. I copied the temps off posts on Higgins storm chasing that people had posted from weather zone except for my own I went and stupidly looked at our thermometer. It's taken a while but it's actually nice and warm now at 18c. I'm not sure on humidity on the granite belt, Stanthorpe and places as such are not often on my to do list :D but I would be guessing you would be right. Being a se qlder you would have been to Maleny or at least know where it is I'm sure. . Hubby and I used to relief milk on a dairy there at Bellthorpe which is just beside Maleny. when our son was just as baby. It rained 24 seven in summer and in winter it was the coldest place I have ever been as an adult. I was so thankful back in those days that they didn't have a thermometer at the place at all because I doubt I would have dragged my butt out of bed at 3 am to round up cows in the freezing temps and blowing winds if they did..:lau

Quote: Well I think I'll just follow the Vets instructions this time. I will get the same of the medicine tonight as it is all the way down at the chicken run.lol.

Quote: Yeah the last lot of Pure White Leghorn boys I had were like a gang. They suck together and went around pecking everyone and pushing them away from the food bowls.
They have all gone now though and unfortunately this guy is going to have to go soon as well.
But it's all good, because I have a FRIZZLE X rooster growing up right now. He is still only a chick though, but I can't wait to see how he turns out.
