Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Blondie has gone full Broodzilla! When I gently coaxed her off the nest for a leg stretch, drink and something to eat she chased me across the garden .. I ran because my toes were exposed! lol

Teila,

My barred rock mama hen gets mean too, but never seen her look that mean! Is she a buff orphington? She is gorgeous! You need a "BEWARE OF BROODER" sign!

Embarrassing for me that she is, in fact, a Pekin so when I was running from a chicken it was not even a LF! lol

Thank you, she is a beautiful gal and normally quite a sweetheart. This is her first time at being a mumma and maybe also her last; broody jail next time

Funny you should mention the sign ... I ordered her a little broody coop of her own; totally necessary as the other gals were living in fear-the-broody mode. Anyways, it came with a free name-plate and I chose 'Beware of Broody' lol. Sadly, the name plate machine broke down and while the coop arrived last week, hopefully the name plate will arrive this week. I will take a picture

Pekins can be some of the worst or best depending on how you look at it broodies. I have the marks to prove it quite often. As much as it is a pain I think it makes me feel better that they will be great mums cause nothing can get close to them. I have a broody black aussie at the moment and when I was in the run yesterday replacing the shavings in their nests I had to keep moving her out of the boxes and she would jump back in right on top of where I was working each time.

lolz appps she is scary!!

Cilla and Tina who have both had hatches have been beautiful little girls, I can pick them up, I can pick up the bubs, no problems.

Blondie has been an education!  First time I have had to don the garden gloves and I have never been chased across the garden by a chicken before :lau

If/when these eggs hatch I do not think I am going to be getting anywhere near them! ;)

:lau Be careful when she hatches. I have had a few non frizzle pekins that will try jump, scratch and fly up and me just when I am changing the food.

Hi fellow Australians! I'm a pretty big newbie here, but have owned chickens for a while and recently got two Indian Runner ducklings who are a couple weeks old. They are very cute and I have read a lot about Runners, but I was wondering how I should go about training them and getting them comfortable with us to not scare themselves when we catch them? Once they're up on the bed they are very happy, as well as when they're having a play outside and we are just sitting with them (they come up on to our lap by themselves which is great), but get pretty scared when I catch them. I've heard this is just a Runner temperament, but Artemis is a lot better with me than Athena. We handle them extensively everyday, so will they simply grow out of it?
I had runners for years til recently and I found them to always be skittish. Lovely ducks but certainly not something for nursing or patting as they get older.

Hi everyone, I am new to raising chickens and have a problem at the moment with one of them. I have 5 in total 1 Rhode Island Red, 2 Golden and 2 Black Bantams. One of the Bantams has a growth on both ears that seems to be getting bigger. All the chickens seemed to have stopped laying and I don't know if this is a coincidence or could somehow be related to the problem with the bantam. I am in Australia and the weather is getting warmer so my understanding is that egg production should increase Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks Gonzi
Fancy has given you some great information so I will just wish you the best of luck with your girl and hope she makes a speedy recovery.

Yep satay she is probably going to be a great mum.

I love how they are always so willing to 'help' us out! "Whatya doing mum? Need a hand?" ... "That's mine, that's mine too and that!"

I got woken at 05:15am by some very unhappy gals; rushed outside still getting dressed on the way, to find a cat stalking them! On the way out there, I noted across the road's cat in our front yard and then this cat I have never seen before in the back yard.

It kind of irks me a little in that I love cats and have two but my cats are inside cats who have an outside play area and are registered with Council.

Afternoon free range has to be under supervision because of cats and the dog across the road which is frequently 'accidentally' let out of the yard. I believe I have my coop and run as secure as it can be and I have not lost anyone to predators to date but it does scare me.

It would be nice if I could trust my neighbours to be responsible pet owners ..... rant over

We all seem to get that one crappy neighbour from time to time don't we.. Thankfully mine have moved on. My cat is terrified of chickens so I have no probs with him . He got chased about 3 acres by the Belgians the other day. He hightailed it out of there :lau

Forgot to add I left the door open the other day when I went up to check the mail and I came back and found my 3 pekins on the couch watching dr phil  I should have got a pic. I do love their normal sweet natures.
