Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

So I came home from work last night to find this:

This will be my new chicken house - my partner is at home at the moment, and basically I do all the outdoors work and animal care - I used to mow the lawns when we had lawns. I've been muttering about how small our chicken coop is - it was only supposed to be temporary while we built the real coop over summer, but we've had a large number of problems, such as my partner having a hernia. I'm about 5'2", and he's 6'4" so there's a considerable difference in what I can carry around - I shlepped the last twenty bags of concrete at twenty kilos each, but it was pretty hard on me as it was up and down three flights of stairs. He just tosses four meter treated pine poles around like nothing.

Anyway, it looks like he's started - there are the foundations. We're building an over-sized coop on the reasoning that more space is better than too little.

Ignore our neighbour's sheds behind - they haven't been into their back yard in over twenty years and refuse to go into it, so everything there is collapsing under a billion tonnes of tradescantia. We're removing the trad from our property with the use of our chickens, but it will come back forever due to the massive piles of blackberries and trad next door. Our only solution is to try to put up a big fence.

I remember when I was a child people always commenting on my parents height differences. They were the same. Mum 5'2" and dad 6'4".. I always hoped i'd get dads height but nope. I only made it to 5'5"... Thankfully my hubby is 6" tall and son is just over 6".

Aaaw that is so cute!

It's funny, they are so tiny but they think they are all grown up; roosting, scratching etc!

I gave Cilla a meal worm as a treat and, of course, she gave it to the bubs!  Watching two 4 days old's on either end of a worm, tugging with all their might is so cute!

I just noticed something with all the "2" talk the other day on byc. You and k are nearly up to 2 years on byc ,

@Teila awwwwwww theyre so cute!
@IamSamSam theyre some good looking chooks!
@satay great to know theres another crazy rooster lady! When i first got my lot there were 4roosters 2 hens! What rotten luck. So i didnt name 2 of them so i could get rid of them when the time came. But it never seemed to come. All my roosters get along really well and know their place. Ive never seen a fight or any evidence thereof. I raised them from 1 week so ive grown attached even without names.. and theyre getting extra beautiful now :p if theyre not fighting theres no need to get rid of them. I like having them happy together instead of possibly in someones stew pot and they provide extra protection for my flock which roam on a few acres so it is well needed. Although I dont think theres an animal out that my Rodney couldnt protect them against :-D

I seem to have a boy fetish thing. Wonder if it is cause I only had brothers growing up :lau I have male dogs, a male cat , a fetish with male roosters lol and a son and no daughters..

@Teila awww theyre some cute pics and descriptions, my fav is the last pic :) really hope there're some frizzles in ur next lot too! Ill def be stalking ur posts closely :p thx for the congrats too!

@Steampunked YAY! How exciting! Yes its a bit of a process waiting for them to finally get round to building what they say they will haha.. but sweet! Now its started hopefully he'll continue on with it at a good pace :-D i can also relate being 5"2 and only 53 kilos myself, when i buy the 30 kilo bags of feed its not what id call easy to lug around lol. Thats why its so much easier for them to do it and just toss it around rather than ur lugging and heaving lol but of course i refuseto let anyone say we cant lift as much as them! Just takes more effort... LOL

Yes- Always build oversize because you will always need more room and more chook houses than you think.
I am up to 16 and still need more room!

Wow! 16 chook houses?!?! Ur certainly not just housing 'backyard' chickens then lol. U have a big chicken farm! What do u do? If u dont mind my asking :)

I am retired and I make a little money selling eggs and chickens.

Great! Sounds like my chook lady but she only has half the amount of sheds lol. Be a fantastic way to spend ur retirement i think :)

Im planning on combining my new girls with the others tomorrow :) as long as they pass a final inspection of course

Have a great weekend everyone!
