Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hope everyone is safe and survived the wild weather. :)
We travelled up north for a nationals qualifier and of course just as I was about to leave , I found ' chicken little ' had hatched out 2 of her adopted blue laced red wyandotte chicks. 2 more had pipped and zipped so I had to move everyone into an A frame , find some chick waterer's and feeders and lock them up.
My friend checked on them while I was gone, but I was worried she would leave the un hatched eggs. Had a great comp , perfect weather and she won both championships . The drive home from launceston along the midlands highway was so nice. All the hedgerows and European trees have just gone into their autumn bronze. I've only been gone 1 night and the chooks were literaly chasing me down for the feed bucket ( my girlfriend rang me later and said that she had fed them at lunch time btw ). Checked the new chicks, all fine but then I find that SLW has hatched 4 bubs and left the other dozen eggs.
So I scooped up the chicks , much to mums dismay and popped them under ' chicken little ' who greatly receives all gifts of the fluffy kind. I'm hoping that the eggs weren't left for too long as I found 2 that shrink wrapped and died. I have 3 that are in the brooder that I will attemp to offer to chicken little today. They are a few weeks old now so I'm not sure how she will feel about that. I can only try. :)

Good morning folks

What comes next after two days of rain in Brisbane? Monday!

Really? Another wet weekend? As you may have guessed, I am a fairly positive person and not much gets me down but weekends like this one sure can mess with my happiness. I know we need rain, very tricky to survive without it, but why does the majority of the rain fall on the days of the week that start with ‘S’?

We have a “90% chance of showers, most likely from late this morning”. Not sure about “late” it is 07:15am and raining! To spice it up, “the chance of thunderstorms with possible heavy falls from late this morning”.

*Sigh* I can’t lock Cilla and the Nuggets in the nest all day so just going to have to keep an eye on water levels and possible swimming pools! It doesn’t help that we have had quite a lot of rain of late and it doesn’t take much for pools to form, the ground can only soak up so much.

Also trying to get the washing done and dry for the start of the work week. I have lived in Darwin and Bundaberg among other places and have never owned a clothes dryer. Since moving to Brisbane, it is the first time I have contemplated buying one!

RodneyRooster back in the early days, I tried my original two gals on watermelon at the suggestion of a BYCer. Popped the watermelon in the run and they were terrified of it “it’s a chicken trap .. hide!”. Tried a couple of times, same reaction.

When Tina, my Silkie (RIP my beautiful girl .. I miss you!) was a little older, we tried the watermelon again. She loved it! She was the one that taught the others that watermelon is not a chicken trap and now they all love it. They usually get watermelon on the weekend and it lasts two days; put it out on the Saturday, pop the leftovers back in the fridge overnight and back out Sunday. When it is not raining of course

I hope your newbie integration goes well.

cwrite I am pleased to read the riders missed the rain. I locked Cilla and the Nuggets in the nest at 03:15 and after the storm passed, opened it up again; she stayed in the nest. Like yours, it was so dark, they all went to bed early.

satay that is a lot of rain!

Hey Fancy we posted around the same time ....

Congratulations on the Championship wins; sounds like a lovely day.

Sorry to read about your losses though

Chicken Little sounds like a wonderful mum; I have never tried giving any of my gals chicks they did not hatch and I am not sure any of them would be as accepting at Chicken Little.

You have probably posted pics of her in the past but I wonder if you would mind sharing another?

Yes she and her mum, who sadly passed away before Xmas are exceptional mothers. Chicken little is the one that was taken by a hawk and my daughter saved her. She must be 6-7 years old . On the weather , funny how Tassie is always the opposite to the mainland.

Chicken little with her last lot of 'adoptees '. She only has one eye, a war injury from the hawk.

Fancy thank you! I remember Chicken Little now .... She was story/chicken of the week .. such a brave little gal! What a sweetheart!

On the weather subject, what I find hard to get used to in Brisbane is the kind of lack of seasons. In other places I have lived, you have your defined wet and dry seasons and can pretty well plan around those, but Brisbane tends to be less defined. It is a bit of a lottery as to what the weather may bring.

I love autumn in tasmania . We lived in Brisbane in 1981. The one thing I remember was that it always rained at school pick up time . We always had nice green grass though.

Teila - I need a dryer occasionally & use the local laundromat. It's great & I don't have to clutter my small laundry with a barely used appliance. Having only lived in Brisbane it's interesting that it's worse than Darwin with respect to clothes drying.

I am counting the days until it cools down.

Congrats to your daughter on her wins, Fancy. And Chicken little is a pretty hen. Nice that she has her niche.

I'm beginning to see the advantage of my previous study method of furiously trying to get through it all at the last minute. It's quite motivating and sure focuses the mind. This time I've been over it all so many times I'm thoroughly sick of the subject and am not sure I know it any better. The only bit I still find interesting is the basics of genetics, a lot of the terms being familiar from my research into chickens.

I think I preferred brissy weather to out here. In brissy at least if it looks like rain it usually does rain out here it's a whole different story. We got 16mm of rain last night.

I have a dryer that I haven't used in years prob since the floods but I keep it incase I need it as the nearest laundry mat is 35km away.
