Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I hope everyone had a great Easter! I had a LOT of comments to catch up with.
Briefly: your baby girld is looking beautiful appps! I can't say when, just hope its soon. : )

Tandykins - not sure I have enough geek to get such an automated bator done. I might put my 11 year old on the case though. He's taught himself two coding languages and wants to make something for mummy to keep me involved in something over my head. Lol. A bit different from what I did for my parents at that age. I would love to do that course though, but have my hands full with two big subjects this semester. I'll keep an eye out for it if they have it again. Funnily enough, I chose my current course after doing a course found through coursera.

Teila,

such beautiful pics. It was lovely and dry today too.

But not too hot, or humid which has been crazy (85%) lately, so just perfect really.

Fancy, I wouldn't recommend Little Valley Poultry supplies for in case stuff to keep. I bought some stuff from them last year mid October and felt like I had received goods that had been on the shelf for a while. I bought terramycin spray & amprolium over the internet to have in case of emergencies. The terramycin spray expires in Feb 2015 (so expired already) & the amprolium expires in April 2015. I won't buy from there again. I'm pretty sure these products should have a shelf life of more than a few months.

Vehve, beautiful snow pics and my daughter loved the bunny nesting clips. We had dwarf dutch rabbits many years ago, but as their nest was underground we never saw the babies until they came up. They were just for pets.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get picky chooks to eat pellets? I've tried mash and so much is wasted. They are now getting pellets which they don't seem to consider as food and a bowl of pellets with water and a few things added, like peas or a bit of greek yoghurt. It looks like porridge once the pellets have gone soggy, but I want them to eat their free feed pellets in the feeder. I'm not sure how to wean them off the porridge. Any ideas?

Oh sorry you've had a bad experience with them , I have already learnt that lesson (use by dates ) and insist on knowing what they are before I purchase. Tends to rub people up the wrong way a bit but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do. They do this ' shortest shelf life ' thing in most businesses though. Horseland are the worst offenders after woolworths.

I'll definitely ask about the use by dates the next time I restock. Considering how squeamish I am, prevention is definitely my best bet.

Satay - if you come down this way again to costco I'd love to swop you something for a banana cutting! Although, going by your extensive garden I'm not sure what I have that you may not. I'll make a list in case you are interested. : )

:D Which languages does your son know? Ours is coded in C++. If he knows that language my husband could share the code we already have with him and could help him if he doesn't understand anything. :)

I ordered my antibiotic cream from the US and got it within a week.  It was about $7 for the tube shipped from eBay.

You can make your own electrolyte solution using:

1 litre water
8 level teaspoons cane sugar
1/2 level teaspoon table salt

This is the homemade electrolyte solution suggested by the NIH for home use.

After last night I couldn't get her to take any fluids or eat anything at all (including tuna, rice, sardines and mealworms), she just dozed off every time I tried to feed her.  She deteriorated quite rapidly this morning and I found her lying on her side and shivering at about 10am.  I made the decision to put her down and we wrapped her body in cotton and cremated her rapidly just in case the cause of death was highly infectious.  I would have liked to have a necropsy done but I couldn't find any resources for one locally.

Afterward I cleaned and disinfected everything she'd touched and washed all of the clothes I'd worn while dealing with her.

My husband and I spent the rest of the afternoon chasing chickens around and worming them.  We weighed each chicken and gave them an appropriate doze of praziquantel.  I'll get something else to use next time but that was what I had right now and I wanted to treat them all immediately.

And now I am very tired.  :/
Sorry to hear about your loss Tandy

Sorry to read that it went this way. Tough decisions those, but often quick action is a real kindness in some cases, and is part of the deal we take on when we decide to care for animals.

Hi all. A question from someone who has only had cooks since last sept. My 2 araucanas who were hatched around July started laying in January. Yay! They havent laid an egg since mid March now. Why has this happened? They aren't moulting, no parasites, healthy, happy. I'm a little puzzled & looking forward to hearing from you seasoned chook people

You are not alone. I've been buying eggs for about a month now. It's the season their bodies rest. A lot of breeds will have a drop in egg production in the colder weather.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words. I've had to put down chickens before. It's never easy but it's always easier than I think it will be and I always feel relieved afterward because they're not longer suffering.
