Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Yay! Hubby let me get some more hens for mothers day!!! 2 silvwr laced wyandottes and a beautiful buff partridge bantam. Love love love them. We might actually start getting some eggs around the place now. (I have only 1 laying hen at the moment...the rest are too young) although my rooster has started breeding one of my 3 5mth old australorps so i uassume that egg powerhouse will start soon :)

Mine are gentle boys and never seen them have so much as a spat. They are all from the one hatch and have grown up together so maybe that helps. My bcm roo was bred here bought by some friends as a day old and returned when he ended up crowing as they can't have boys.

Phew, cold weather kills me.

Little to update on the Owlhome front save that I have 13 fully grown chickens, and one rooster - Ivan the Terrible turned out to be Ivan the Terrible Rooster because he is a HEN.

Aside from that, holy cow, I've never even had one measley egg from these slackers! They're all about seven months old now, and they are ridiculous slackers. I still feed them, though :)

Hey folks ... I posted this in the illness/disease thread and would, of course, be interested in your thoughts also ......

Hi and thank you in advance for your thoughts

I wasn't sure whether to post this in here or the chicken behavioural section.

Anyways, I have a Bantam Langshan just over two years old.

For various reasons, today she was clucking louder and more often than she usually does. She is a bit of a whinger but was more vocal about it today; hens not being where she thinks they should, hens on the roost when they should not be etc. Her frequent protests required many breaks from work to run out and see that all was OK.

Anyways, this afternoon, when I let them out for a free range, she proceeded to tell me how bad her day had been and when talking to me her 'voice' is sort of gravelly.

She appears quite happy otherwise, scratching, eating, drinking. Her comb is still nice and red and she has no nasal or eye discharge. Her breathing is normal and not strained. Poops look OK also.

I am probably just being a worry wart and while I do not think she is ill, I will feel better if I knew chickens 'lose their voice' from overuse the same as we do?
