Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hey folks ... I posted this in the illness/disease thread and would, of course, be interested in your thoughts also ......

Hi and thank you in advance for your thoughts

I wasn't sure whether to post this in here or the chicken behavioural section.

Anyways, I have a Bantam Langshan just over two years old.

For various reasons, today she was clucking louder and more often than she usually does.  She is a bit of a whinger but was more vocal about it today; hens not being where she thinks they should, hens on the roost when they should not be etc.  Her frequent protests required many breaks from work to run out and see that all was OK.

Anyways, this afternoon, when I let them out for a free range, she proceeded to tell me how bad her day had been and when talking to me her 'voice' is sort of gravelly.

She appears quite happy otherwise, scratching, eating, drinking.  Her comb is still nice and red and she has no nasal or eye discharge.  Her breathing is normal and not strained.  Poops look OK also.

I am probably just being a worry wart and while I do not think she is ill, I will feel better if I knew chickens 'lose their voice' from overuse the same as we do?

She might just be spruking to the others, giving them the pep talk and telling them that momma Teila isn't very happy with the lack of eggs.
Seriously though , increase vocalizing is usually accompanied by an egg. Might be that the drought is about to break. And yes , you worry too much. :)

lol Fancy and YES I do worry too much!

Gravelly is probably not a correct description, I think Hoarse would better describe it. As I said, she seems fine other than this new voice she has. I will chalk it up to overuse but keep an eye on her.

Thank You :)

She's a beauty

she just remind me of my vilma she's a pure breed leghorn a bit flighty and can hardly catch her but she simply can't resist those mealworms lol she even asks for one by squaking heaps loud until she gets one.
Thanks chooks01.

Snowy certainly has the leghorn vocal side of things down and does enjoy the odd sprint across the lawn. She's a silly airhead, but knows exactly what she wants under all the ditziness - babies & LOTS of them.

I'm working this am but 10yo is making curry for dinner and wanted to make pancakes so I could hear them up at 4am this morning cause he didn't want to get up

Wow, your boy is a real trooper Sam! There must be some kind of medal for getting up to make breakfast at 4am!
Lovely pictures. Snowy looks adorable in that pic of her

Thanks Satay. : )

My 3 pet roos and a cross bred at the front. My bcm marans rooster Cobber, My blue copper marans roo Blue, and my splash marans rooster Splash. There is also my little bcm hen there too.
They are lovely & so nice that they get on.

Fancy, your dog has the right idea.

Teila, I've been waiting for the day that Steve (our official flock complainer) goes hoarse from shouting about the latest thing. I'm sure it's a thing they can accomplish so hopefully Dusty will recover soon & maybe lay you an egg.

I hope everyone had a good Mother's Day. My kids had it easy because I had to knuckle down & get my last essay for the semester out of the way, but now I am FREE, such a good feeling - until exams anyway. Book & chicken time in the sun tomorrow I think.

Hi everyone got a little five week old welsummer roo. Just wondering what do I feed this little booger? I only have pullet grower pellets(have noticed contains antibiotic!) and organic chick grower Mash.

From what I've seen the only problem is if they get too much calcium, all of those are designed for before you start giving pullets calcium so should be fine.

Check the calcium level on the bag. You really don't want to exceed 2% for Roos. If you want to consume eggs you should look for antibiotic free products but that's a whole other issue.
