Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Well the brewery won't need to put the beer on ice this month. Adds a whole new meaning to a ' coldly '. :)

Best conditioning food ideas please.

I'm trying to get some meat on Carls skin and bones frame. At the moment all she will eat is greens, grass mostly and she is picking the clover from the lawn and watermelon ( to which I'm adding probiotics and the poly aid plus much to her disgust). And that's it, she won't touch anything else, none of her normal favourite foods. She seems happy enough and is wandering round with everyone etc but is really painfully thin.

Have tried
Pellets and crumble both dry and softened with water
Scrambled eggs (I mean really, what chicken won't eat that! I even tried putting bits of watermelon on top but she just picked them out and left the eggs!)
Porridge.

Other good conditioning foods anyone can think of for me to try.?

Mine bowl me over for cooked pasta and sardines in olive oil. :)

So funny! Pet or treats though?

sjturner - nice looking coop!

I had a cuddle with Steve (head hen) on my lap yesterday for the first time ever and I spotted two spots on her comb. It looks like she has a mild case of fowl pox & tolerated the cuddle because she isn't feeling that great. Anyway, the others seem fine so the kids got to help me dab the small spots with betadine & I'll see how things progress. I'm hoping it stays a mild case, but it looks like I'll have to vaccinate next year.

cwrite - I wondered about that, especially for my two big girls who might have a field day with a very young rat, but I have never found any remains - and they certainly would not be able to demolish an entire rat ( at least I don't believe so ). .... and I have never seen them chase the rats. So I think they are chook pets or companions !!

Mindy Araucana, looks for them to come out, and I have seen one feeding with her in the remains of the scratch mix on the ground. She also allows all birds to partake of parties, EXCEPT miners which she chases out of her run.

There are two nesting boxes in the big coop - neither of which have ever been used for nesting ( they throw the straw out asap ) .... and lay on straw in front of the nesting boxes ... ergo, the nesting boxes are for cold nights. That is - one for the two girls who snuggle up and keep warm, and one for the rats who leave their droppings in the second nesting box - and the big girls never sit in that one ?? I have laid bricks on the floor of the big coop to stop rats getting in, but that left a wee hole around an upright - didn't quite fit etc. - which I have now jammed up with wood. !! Yet somehow, they can actually push a brick upwards to get in. ( should offer to a side-show - 'strongest rats on earth' ). They all seem to live happily together.

btw - the two big girls are the chooks who took 2 YEARS to learn how to roost properly. Hysterical lot they are.

Was freezing ruddy cold here this morning ( Victoria - Dandenong Ranges ) .... with more to come, but the weekend sounds promising with some sunshine and no rain.

Found one violet that has bloomed - which is a tad off-putting - they usually start blooming around July, ready for spring. The weather is truly nuts all over.

Have a good week, all ...

Cheers, Annie B.
