So who else is vege gardening?

Just added to my garlic I planted the other week by planting some freckles lettuce and english spinach seeds.
Now I just have to finish draining and raising my vege beds so I've got somewhere to plant them when they come up!

Been looking at these mini-poly tunnels too, wondering if using one in our temperate climate might let me grow cherry tomatoes (they seem to come up this time of year by themselves anyway) and capsicums over winter.

LOL my first time mumma took 9 mths to cut off from the ones she raised - and remained in the flock.

Wow, that's a determined mumma!

I've been feeling slightly guilty about still getting eggs while so many are having a drought, but today I got one of my occasional speckled eggs & noticed that I had my full range of colours so I thought what the heck - picture time.

This pic is the one that looked closest to their actual colours.
My little flock is happily settling down in a food coma after stuffing themselves full of rice and sardines. Snowy wins the greedy award surprisingly going by the size of the appendage hanging off her neck at the moment. Right, procrastinating over for now.

I love the vege patch, sadly last season all I planted were cherry toms , silver beet and pumpkin. My vege garden was drastically reduced in size as I used it as a chicken hospital. We have plans to increase this season and I was given 30 m of cherry orchard netting , so we will make a mini orchard. That way I can keep some chooks in there to clean up the excess fruit. Might also keep the heavy frost off the pumpkins.

I have repaired and reinforced my green house and planted out a couple of garden beds with winter veggies for me and the chooks.

Hello fellows, I just wanted to provide you with an update regarding the stocking densities of free range egg farms and ask for your assistance one last time. Hopefully, if all goes well, we will all have free-range eggs from happy hens on Australian supermarket shelves forever. ACTION: Please click here today to send an instant message to the Fair Trading Minister in your State, letting them know your expectations of true free range. We have provided our suggested text to help you, but do feel free to add your own comments or tailor it as you wish. This is such a critical point in this campaign, so on behalf of all the hens and the true free range producers we thank you once again for your amazing support! - Humane Society International Thanks for taking the time to read this! Cheers, Gold Coaster
Hello, I sent my instant message!
I am disgusted in the state of our egg industry. You cannot trust where eggs on shelves come from anymore because labels don't really mean anything yet you can no longer go to a farm or backyard where you can see true free range chickens and buy their eggs! This has also virtually halted the sale of true free range eggs in farmers markets because the small stall holders that you can talk to and ask about their eggs and where they come from, can no longer sell them! If you think I'm going to buy eggs from a supermarket shelf due to this manipulation you have another thing coming. If I can't buy free range eggs I will produce my own!
This is my reason for buying chickens last year as I like to buy my eggs locally from people's homes or from my local farmers market and I can't do that anymore due to regulations!

@Ashburnham. I see you have a plastic covered greenhouse. That's what I've been looking at but more over just one bed. Do you find it warms enough to grow things out of season or do you still just grow winter crops?

I do. Just planted spinach seeds this morning, Have celery, beans, broad beans, sweet potatoes and capsicums in at the moment. I have never had to plant cherry tomatoes they grow here everywhere. Also have 5 lots of chillis all fruiting at the moment and a tonne of fruit trees ready to pick.

Was thinking capsicums too, but in a mini plastic covered tunnel to see if I can set fruit over winter, they are so darn expensive over winter and we use a heap.

I think that would be the way to go. I have my capsicums in our small covered garden (chicken wire over the top) with the chillis. They are only small at the moment so will see as it will be my first time of putting them in during the cooler months. We do have the advantage of the warmer day temps in winter than down south but we also get a lot of frosts so I need to protect most things I grow from frosts too. I say give it a go you don't have much too loose except a few dollars.
