Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks.its a Nasty flu (not a bad cold which is mixed up)
Better than yesterday but doc says if you have the leave I want you to stay home so I'm home for next week and half

No crack of dawn starts for 1.5 weeks! Enjoy as much as you can while recovering.
I had to laugh - so many people dread the first crow because it means rehoming. At least your not so little rooster had his welcomed.

It's a miracle the little one that was in a bad way yesterday afternoon has survived.  I took the advise someone posted about assisting a hatch and this morning thought I was going to wake to a dead chick but I must have done something right.  I had to assist it the rest of the way out the shell this morning and it's doing well so far still in the incubator a bit lonely as the only survivor, it's done a big green poo, hope this is a good sign?  I guess the next few days will tell if it survives the long haul, going to keep it in the incubator for 24 hours or should I go longer?

Once they are dry and ' fluffed up ' it's best to transfer them to the brooder. Be sure that it has clean fresh water ( in a shallow bowl , to prevent drowning ) crumble and a good heat source. Always a good idea to keep a spare bulb ,
This link will help you with the heat chart.

Thank you. It is sad and as much as I want to hate the bird it has chicks of it's own to feed so I can't hold anything against it.

Update on hen with canker.....
I managed to get some metronidazole off a friend who had some left over the other day and just gave hen her third day dosage out of five. So far there seems to be no change. I'm hoping for the best but I'm starting to worry that the pills might not be working. I've promised myself not to panic for the next two days while she's still on meds but to think of my possible next option which is maybe give copper sulphate another go. It didn't work last time but maybe after the meds it'll be different (wishful thinking)

V1cky ... by now you would be watching and waiting, and all I can say is I hope with all my might, that your chicken pulls through and past the canker or whatever it is ( wet / dry fowl pox ? ). ...

Guess at this point of time, just about anything that might help is worthwhile ...

Best of good luck to you ....

Chenee42 make sure you update us with a photo!! Or 10, everyone loves a fluffy butt :)

Make sure you do rest Iamsamsam the flu is awful! I had infuenza A while pregnant with my last babe, ended up having a c section at 36 weeks after a prom (waters broke early for those not up on the birth acronyms) every single time I coughed it felt like my stitches were ripping open. So yeah, don't do that. Get better soon!!

Well today at about 4pm I saw a post on FB, at 550 2 new girls turned up at my door :)
No names yet but aren't the pretty :)
400

It was already dark when the woman who brought them put them in the coop so I didn't realise till I took the photo but the hen im now calling Sybil because of her persistent scattered appearance, was already in there. So she's unwittingly volunteered to be the canary. I swear I'd closed the doors after I cleaned it for the new girls but they were out free ranging and as usual the isa's decided not to go to bed in their coop, Lily and petunia were up on the window sill by the back door as usual. Not sure how to break them of that.

Thank you Anniebee, I hope she makes it through this too.
She gets her last dosage tomorrow afternoon but I still can't see any change. Considering she's had this for at least 3 weeks and still hanging in there I'm hoping that's a good sign. I checked her crop this afternoon and she didn't feel full so she's not eating as she should be but considering she runs from me when it's medication time I'm taking her energy level as a good thing.
I'm watching the build up in her throat daily and so far it's not getting any worse which I'm glad of coz I don't want to have to pull some of it out and hurt her.
Wish I could do more for her but all I can really do after this last dose is try to get her to eat more so she keeps her strength up and hopefully her immune system can fight whatever it is off.

You know you're a chicken person when you see crowing as a good thing lol

For sure. It is my favourite sound here. I'm not that fussed on bleating sheep at the moment but I do understand why when bell has young Sunday but sometimes I do feel like telling her enough already
