Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hawk attacks here haven't stopped them laying, are you sure they're not in a molt ?
I just had a scare, hubby is out scallop diving and a scallop diver has just been taken by a great white of Maria island. He just rang to let me know he is ok , it was about 20 k from where they are. Phew, still poor bugger, no chance of me get taken by a shark. ;)
Not going anywhere near the water.

Scary indeed, especially after that surfing video the other day.

Thank God to hear your hubby is ok .... the shark attack was on the news ( Victoria ) this evening, and is such a rare event in those waters. ... such a tragedy. ... Sharks seem to be coming in closer and closer - all over the place ... very frightening, and like you, I am not fond of water - past my ankles !!

First - welcome to Aliyah7404 ...

hope you enjoy your days on the Aussie threads here ... you are in the U.S. ? Can't recall if you said where exactly. ... would be interested to know.

Second, I am bouncing off the walls in shock, and have just gone and candled all my purchased eggs LOL ( my girls are on sit-down, strike, lock-outs, and picketting, due I think to the extremely cold wet weather in Victoria ) .... for a bit of fun - did not expect to see anything whatsoever - and I didn't. !!

Bit of a surprise that some purchased eggs can be fertile but more to the point, that they can be hatched, particularly after being in a refridgerator. Have opened supermarket eggs over the years and found a little foetus or whatever it is called in chickens, inside. Just presumed it would never have been viable, and used it anyway. That was BC ( before chooks ).

If ( a 100 to 1 chance ) anyone found a fertile free range egg from the supermarket, and if perchance, a hen was broody ... would it work to bring the egg to room temperature as mentioned - and stick it ( or maybe even 'them' ) under the broody chicken ? ... Or for that matter, keeping eggs that are purchased fertile, in the refridgerator - to WAIT for a chicken to go broody, or return to broodiness - would that work ? ... I am guessing from the comments, it would - but only for a limited time ?

Absolutely fascinating.

Makes me again, want to raise some chicks, however, visiting a hospital every day to visit my poor husband who would totally have some kind of comatose reaction, at the thought, perhaps not a good idea.

.... We don't have the proper set-up for chicks - unfortunately, and he has put so much work into making good and safe housing for my three chooks ( separated because of punch-ups as mentioned before here ) ... I wouldn't ask him to do more at this stage.

Cheers to everybody ----

Another diver was harassed by a shark in the same area yesterday. As a teenager I spent my school holidays at port Kemble beach and even attained my bronze medallion in the surf. There would have to be a full on ' sharknado ' event for one to get me here in the valley.
One of the navy divers today had a bull seal encounter, this was further south but sharks like seal on the menu, so there is more than likely a link between the incidents.

Sharks and Orcas go after seal ... My son Craig, is about to embark on his second deployment to the Antarctic. Leaves in 2 weeks for Hobart to be tutored ( ? ) at the Royal Hobart Hospital to become a 'lay surgical assistant' ... ( the mind boggles ) .... they only ever have one doctor at each of the 3 Aussie bases down there ( I figure two docs. each would be better - and safer ) .... anyway ----- ... seals are prevalent there in breeding seasons, and Orcas do go south to the Antarctic - but not so much sharks. ... In fact I don't think any sharks inhabit those wild, freezing waters. The Waddell seals are cute and docile, the elephant seals ( umm - maybe not ) and the leopard seals - definitely no way. No-one would want to be near those.

Craig leaves on the Aurora Australis, mid October for another year down there. .... He is a diesel mechanic full time, has led in Search and Rescue - and Fire fighting , they all have to do their duties - his, this time in the operating theatre ???

We can only hope his new skills are never called into practice, for obvious reasons - mainly the continued safety of the expeds. down there, in every respect !!

He will also be this time, on crane duties - driving, as well as dogman for cranes.

Anyway, I have waffled on again - growing something out of the word 'seal' .... nothing to do with chooks this time !!!

Cheers ...

Glad He is ok. I'm sure he has enough experience to know when it's not safe.
For me. I love sharks. They are opportunistic feeders and especially a big mumma of a great white. I'm glad surfers /divers have a respect for and understand they they are entering the Sharks domain. And if you look like seal dinner there is a probability you will encounter them while in the water.
