Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Sorry to hear about your chicks Satay. The snake is probably in the best place though - for its own health.

Some lazy bast$§¥d just threw 2 Isa browns over my fence this morning. So much for biosecurity! I've isolated them and now have to find them a home before tonight. Any suggestions?

For some people it's a simple case of ' ignorance is bliss ' . Do you have any friends or family that have no chickens that could keep them safe for the short term?
The RSPCA will probably have carers . The one at unanderra seems to take most creatures.

Good to hear cwrite. People con be so lazy and inconsiderate. I know the local high school farm is constantly having roosters thrown over their fence.

I don't understand why people would get rid of hens by throwing them over fences when it's so easy to rehome them. In my opinion people like that shouldn't be allowed to have animals, there could be dogs on the other side of the fence or a pool they could fall into.

Glad you could rehome them so quickly cwrite.

Well I just got my shock of the day lol.
Cleaning out the chook cages and let the chooks free range while I did so. Went to round up the chooks and couldn't find one but was sure she never went out so I checked the nest... nope not there

Just happened to look up and I found her alright...

Thanks for all that info on lime. My dad used to spread it under the house to control fleas, (at least that's what I think he did it for!!) later when we moved out of town he used to drench the chook pen in diesel of all things. I'll never understand anything that man did lol.

So sorry for the loss of your chicks, I have nothing against snakes but I'm not sure if be comfortable having a red belly so close to my home.

It's seems Fleur is set on being broody, I thought she was done playing as she's so easy to get up but she's still spending most of her time in the nest, only getting up to eat or if I throw scratch or scraps, she's also ending up with all the eggs. I've got some fertile eggs coming, I'm going to try moving her tonight, I don't know where yet as Chos in one pen and the other chicks in the other but I'll figure it out. When I put the call out for some eggs I had a guy ask me if I'd hatch some for him so as well as some Australorp and Sussex for Fleur I'm also getting some silver porcelain Belgians for the incubator! Going to be lots of chicks here next month :D

I am horrified by by some of the 'old wives tales ' that I hear on this site. The same people that follow these theories, are the first to tell you that ' chickens just up and die for no good reason '. I live by the theory, ' you are what you eat ' . Poison your chickens and you may as well poison your family.

Don't know how effective this would be, but might be worth a try.

Certainly is worth a try - around chicken enclosures. thanks for posting fancychooklady --- will pass it on to those who most likely might need it ( that includes us, living between two creeks - although have never seen a snake in our back garden ) - thank heaven.

Was talking to a couple with a large property, out in the 'sticks' with loads of trees and tall grasses around, and a lot of young lizards. And where lizards are, there can usually be snakes.

They have two small children, a dog and a horse. There are electrical snake repeller kits - work similarly ( I think ) to garden lights. The ground insert repellers, vibrate when turned on - and snakes won't come near them. There is very mixed reaction as to their effectiveness, but a friend in Narranderra NSW, swears by them - she has the expensive kits to protect the joeys she saves from road accidents etc. ( works with WIRES )...

however, low cost repellers do not ( apparently ) do the job. Got to be prepared to spend some cash on them. Just one of many many sites on the subject ( sales and information ) is here : http://www.sureguard.com.au/Solar-Snake-Repellent .... this uses solar ?? Not sure about this one. But it's a start !!

Some other research cannot go astray. There's plenty to look at about these electrical repellents.

Cheers .......

Awwwwwww! How cute Ash!

Haha appps it would make sense the way u were assuming. Yes i always try to use a mask when using the lime just in my bigish sheds it was really the only practical option and it has worked well for me :)

Sorry to hear about the chicks satay :-(

This was the inside of that black looking egg.. any help? Is it just a rotten egg? Ive honestly never seen one before.. lol..

Have left the eggs for 2 nights now and still no sign of broodies :-( will have to collect them today.

No help from me - sorry. Have never seen anything like that .... have only seen a fair amount of blood in blood egg yolks. Looks way more than that though. Looks gross ??

A rotten egg would have knocked your head off with the smell I would imagine. But it certainly wasn't anything to do with soil colouring the outer shell of the egg - was it !!!!

Not having read the remainder of the posts today, I will be interested to see if anyone has any idea whatsoever, as to what the heck THIS really was ????

... maybe an avian vet site could be of help ??

Hope you never have another one !!!

Cheers. ....

Bit of sad news from here. I went out with a friend yesterday morning for a few hours and when I came back to check the chicks on the grass. 2 Belgians were gone. I could see a little bit of the grass was pushed down beside the back of their cage. I suspect a snake took them.. Nothing else would have been able to get in the little gap and they could not get out there . Filled up the gap now. On a nicer note another little Belgian hatched yesterday from the Christmas lot.

So sorry to hear that satay .... I hope the snake is gone forever and that no more visit.

Good to hear though, of the the new Belgian hatch ....
