Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Check out what my neighbour gave me today!

He had him growing in a tall pot in the front garden but he had become totally pot-bound and my neighbour wanted to use the pot for something else and did not want him!

His name is Alex ... as in Alex Hailey - Roots

Now I just need to know what he is???? And, hope the move has not killed him.

Edited to Add: one of the benefits from sharing excess eggs

And, research (ask a friend on Facebook lol) indicates Alex is a Yucca.

… Gotta luv a 3 day weekend!

devinandfeather I am not sure if it is my computer or your post, but the text appears to be chopped in half horizontally? All I could see was the top half of “Well I have some bad news and some really good news so bad news first my second gosling drowned it out adult” so I think I read that bit right but then nothing … I am sorry to hear you lost a gosling

I am not familiar with English Bantams or Orp eggs so I am not sure of the size differential but the most bantam eggs I have given my Pekins and Silkies is 9 so satay’s suggestion of 4 sounds like a good starting point.

appps I agree with Fancy and would stick with dirt.

Oh no Fancy I am so sorry to hear that your eggs were collected and so sad for your poor little hen

Hi sorry for that I thought something wasn't right and anyway the one died in the adults water troft and drowned then my second female sitting lost eight eggs due to being rotten then my smallest female this is the good news by the way has hatched out all six of her eggs and they are all doing well but one so yeah here are pics do you have any suggestions on why they leg is bad

devinandfeather as I mentioned earlier, I am sorry for your loss

Your little goslings are adorable!

Ouch! that does look sore, poor little munchkin. Sorry, I have no idea what it is. Is that a scab or sore on the joint? Maybe a cut that got infected?

I am by no means an expert on what ails our feathered friends but maybe until someone more experienced responds, you could try an Epsom Salts soak of the limb? I do not think it will hurt and just the soaking may relieve any pain or if infected, draw it out.

As teila said, it could be an injury. Ducks and geese also show these symptoms if they are niacin deficient. I would add some niacin to the feed, Brewers yeast sprinkled on the feed is probably the easiest way of administering . https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry

I'd leave it dirt, I stopped using shavings when I lost a few chicks ( eating the stuff ) to pasty butt. I gave up, when I was in hospital I gave my well intended friends strict instructions on which pens to collect from , only to find that the silkie eggs that were almost ready to hatch had also been collected. Back to the drawing board, momma is still sitting, poor little thing.

Oh lord fancy I think I would have lost it if someone did that. I mean if it was just thinking they were helping or were little kids I can understand (though I'd still be mad) but if you'd told them where to collect from then why did they even go near the broody!! I'm sure they were devo when you told them though. If they weren't I'd almost be tempted to open an egg and show them the fully developed chick they killed. Almost, I don't think I actually would... Might be a bit mean

I hate it when I have to ask other people to care for my animals, I'm so much more relaxed about my kids! Lol

Thank you for the feeding-while-away tip Fancy. Thanks for sharing satay’s chicks Sam, they are adorable! Congratulations on resisting temptation RodneyRooster … Step 1 on the road to recovery from chicken math .. lol ;) And, congrats on the new tele also .. the one thing we make sure is good quality in this house is the television. We figure spending that little bit more on a television is a good move for us; we do not go out to dinner, we do not go to the movies, we do not leave home unless we have to; but we do have Foxtel and we like to watch the AFL. I had a really fun day today … the pictures are not the best because of the lighting this time of day, but it gives you the idea. This is the view from one of the kitchen windows (the view from both was identical): This is now the view from the other window: I have room for another pot that size or a couple of smaller pots or maybe even a gnome or two ;) I have capsicum in one and tomatoes in the other; they get the morning sun and shade over around 02:30 in the afternoon; the pots are filled with mostly compost from our compost bin and they are out of sight of curious chickens! And, this is our Rainbow Chilli bush .. it is safe from the gals because they do not walk on the stones .. ouchies!
Yeah we were about to get a flat screen when i fell pregnant with my 5 year old, my sister had young kids and flat screen then. So many finger prints and broken tvs so we decided we wouldnt get one until we could attach it to the wall, which we now can!! I got into veggie gardens last spring, i grow corn, capsicum, cucumber, tomatoes, melons of all varieties, spinach, lettuce, passionfruit and just recently berries and grapes :) im sure theres more but thats all i can think of. I always have plenty of friends to give excess crop to but i do only grow things i know we'll eat.
Would you use wood shaving in a small run (2.5mx2.5m) for chicks or leave a dirt floor? Trying to be get more optimistic about these last two eggs as so far haven't even started rebuilding the extended run or organising their small run (think I've been a bit too disheartened to bother). I cannot for the life of me remember what I did last time.
Ive always used dirt. Much cheaper and easier to clean. If its only a small run i guess the price wouldnt be a biggy but when i first made the decision for my big areas price was a huge factor. Being the recycler and non waster that i am i actually use a big colander type container that i shovel all the poo into and then shake out all the dirt i shovelled up with it. (With a mask) stops me from taking all the dirt with the poo and gives me poo-only compost. Sorry to hear about the losses. I know nothing about ducks or bird injuries sorry, poor thing. Very content tho :) My chooks are all having trouble today ITS SO HOT! Luvkily they all have lots of shaded areas and the wind has picked up but jeez i cant stay out there for more than 10 mins at a time. 38 and HOT today. So they all have ice cubes in there water and 2 changes of water for the day. Also left a couple ice cubes near my broodies so they can peck at them if they feel like it. Dont know if itll do anything but its another attempt at keeping them cool. Our dog loves eating ice cubes on hot days like this :)

Bleh, hot. I buy the generic frozen peas and pour them into the water trays. Cools the water and keeps them entertained, bobbing for peas.

Yeah it's pretty warm here too but only 35. I dragged penny out off her nest for a drink and finally stirred myself to make a separate area for Al who has also decided to go broody, too darn hot to be sitting in the nesting box for no reason.

I like the pea idea :)
