Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

No idea appps lol.

Fancy that is the coolest idea ever!!! I used to love apple bobbing :p definitely using that one :) i also give them frozen grapes which they love but need to put more in the freezer!

I freeze tinned corn with water in take away containers, then put it in a dish, some of them avoid it like it's poison but others love pecking the corn kernels out of the ice, plus the water is cold as it melts

I'd leave it dirt, I stopped using shavings when I lost a few chicks ( eating the stuff ) to pasty butt. I gave up, when I was in hospital I gave my well intended friends strict instructions on which pens to collect from , only to find that the silkie eggs that were almost ready to hatch had also been collected. Back to the drawing board, momma is still sitting, poor little thing.

Oh lord fancy I think I would have lost it if someone did that. I mean if it was just thinking they were helping or were little kids I can understand (though I'd still be mad) but if you'd told them where to collect from then why did they even go near the broody!! I'm sure they were devo when you told them though. If they weren't I'd almost be tempted to open an egg and show them the fully developed chick they killed. Almost, I don't think I actually would... Might be a bit mean

I hate it when I have to ask other people to care for my animals, I'm so much more relaxed about my kids! Lol

So do I!
We are thinking about purchasing an automatic chicken door by Trident.
:cd Has anyone got any experience with automatic chicken opener doors?

Thank you for the feeding-while-away tip Fancy. Thanks for sharing satay’s chicks Sam, they are adorable! Congratulations on resisting temptation RodneyRooster … Step 1 on the road to recovery from chicken math .. lol ;) And, congrats on the new tele also .. the one thing we make sure is good quality in this house is the television. We figure spending that little bit more on a television is a good move for us; we do not go out to dinner, we do not go to the movies, we do not leave home unless we have to; but we do have Foxtel and we like to watch the AFL. I had a really fun day today … the pictures are not the best because of the lighting this time of day, but it gives you the idea. This is the view from one of the kitchen windows (the view from both was identical): This is now the view from the other window: I have room for another pot that size or a couple of smaller pots or maybe even a gnome or two ;) I have capsicum in one and tomatoes in the other; they get the morning sun and shade over around 02:30 in the afternoon; the pots are filled with mostly compost from our compost bin and they are out of sight of curious chickens! And, this is our Rainbow Chilli bush .. it is safe from the gals because they do not walk on the stones .. ouchies!
Yeah we were about to get a flat screen when i fell pregnant with my 5 year old, my sister had young kids and flat screen then. So many finger prints and broken tvs so we decided we wouldnt get one until we could attach it to the wall, which we now can!! I got into veggie gardens last spring, i grow corn, capsicum, cucumber, tomatoes, melons of all varieties, spinach, lettuce, passionfruit and just recently berries and grapes :) im sure theres more but thats all i can think of. I always have plenty of friends to give excess crop to but i do only grow things i know we'll eat.
Would you use wood shaving in a small run (2.5mx2.5m) for chicks or leave a dirt floor? Trying to be get more optimistic about these last two eggs as so far haven't even started rebuilding the extended run or organising their small run (think I've been a bit too disheartened to bother). I cannot for the life of me remember what I did last time.
Ive always used dirt. Much cheaper and easier to clean. If its only a small run i guess the price wouldnt be a biggy but when i first made the decision for my big areas price was a huge factor. Being the recycler and non waster that i am i actually use a big colander type container that i shovel all the poo into and then shake out all the dirt i shovelled up with it. (With a mask) stops me from taking all the dirt with the poo and gives me poo-only compost. Sorry to hear about the losses. I know nothing about ducks or bird injuries sorry, poor thing. Very content tho :) My chooks are all having trouble today ITS SO HOT! Luvkily they all have lots of shaded areas and the wind has picked up but jeez i cant stay out there for more than 10 mins at a time. 38 and HOT today. So they all have ice cubes in there water and 2 changes of water for the day. Also left a couple ice cubes near my broodies so they can peck at them if they feel like it. Dont know if itll do anything but its another attempt at keeping them cool. Our dog loves eating ice cubes on hot days like this :)
Ha! Good to hear we aren't the only ones that give their chooks ice. We actually freeze water in ice cream containers then pop them into their buckets. Very spoilt chickens. Tonight it's going to be 7 degrees so might even put the brooder light on for the eight week olds. Crazy weather here at the mo. Winters today then up to mid thirties by end of the week! Very different weather patterns now-a-days.

Arghhhhhh. Incubator has gone stupid again. Alarm just went off, it's running a full degree lower than it was for absolutely no reason I can see.

So day 1 my calibration to get it to heat correct to my own hygrometers readings was -4. Then it worked all the way up to +4 and now suddenly we are back the other way again but all the way to -10. No wonder it's owner never had anything hatch with it just using it's thermometer.

Going to be a late night sitting up and checking it doesn't decide to change back again.

Don't know anything about incubating but feel your pain. Must be very frustrating! Good luck!

@locknest4 i wouldnt have room to keep an ice ceam bucket in the freezer! But i do do that with 600ml water bottles though. In summer.

Ohhh fancy im so sorry i obviously didnt read that post just the ones after it. I would be FUMING. Even if they were well intended friends. And absolutely heartbroken :-( <3 xx

Anybody ever had to move eggs that were hatching? I have 8 in the Bator that were due in about 4 days I started lockdown Saturday. In the heat today the Bator rocketed up to almost 40 and i used ice and cool water to bring it down, but temps still fluctuated a lot. When I candled I have one external pip (duckling is peeping and progressing well) two internal pips and everyone else is wriggling away. I'm worried I'll have to move the Bator tomorrow I cant have it that hot again, or be taking the lid off, but I'm also scared to move them. Any ideas?
