Good morning folks

What the? It has now come to the point that a person is no longer safe shopping for chicken feed!

So, we rock up at Brendale Produce where we have been buying our feed for three years now and who only ever have may be half a dozen or so of your standard garden variety LF’s for sale and as always, I wander over to say “hello” from a distance.

Oh no! Full reverse .. turn .. run!! I did not see Pekin’s! No fair!

I managed to resist temptation but may just have to order online from now on

potato chip they were very similar in colour to your Jeannie. Did you ever find out what the colouring is called?

I have, in fact, seen one bantam at Brendale Produce before and that was Dusty so the temptation resistance was not working so well that day

Fancy that is a great job on the coop

I am also looking forward to the pics of the final product.

Is that one of your new Silkies? Such a cutie!!

Anniebee I too have a ‘who laid that egg’ dilemma. I had a small, very white egg in the nest box yesterday. Cilla and Blondie are the only one’s who lay small, white eggs and not a chance it was Blondie who is still heavily moulting and Cilla is not squatting or showing any interest in the nest box.

I marked it on the spreadsheet as Cilla’s but really have no idea who laid it.

How awful for your friend to see her Siamese taken; I too would be inconsolable and still feel ill if I think about how close I came to seeing Chimee run over.

Like potato chip I am lucky enough to not have the “meanies” that you do. I know there is the chance of foxes here but I have never seen one or had a problem. The new run is also going to be more secure.

Oh dear LuckysMum, while Bear sounds very clever, letting out your little ones was naughty. I know I said it the other day but he is a beautiful dog! Sorry, not sure of the Butcher bird question as I have not really encountered them here, that I know of.

Remember my baby pigeon? He's all growed up and cooing :)

Dad has decided to peck at him and chase him from the feed so he's inside till I come up with a plan b

Oh and on a positive with Carl we had a pretty good looking poop with solid enough to hold its form and white in it yesterday afternoon so at least the confinement is finally helping with that! She was eating like she was starving this morning so another good sign after weeks of no interest.

So pretty Appps :love
:weee Yay Carl :weee :fl She keeps her good improvement going.

well, the chook farm guy said she was cuckoo, but when I got home and looked it up, cuckoo pictures seem to be all over the same colour pattern, so I am not sure about it, thought maybe I hadn't "heard right". Jeannie is 2-toned, her head and neck are different.....

She could be a hybrid? If it's not an official pekin colour maybe she is crossed with something else. Flossie is a cross, frizzle/d'uccle I think he said. As you can tell, I'm not too bothered by parentage, I'm not a breeder and don't need to know, I just like to know what things are if they are "something". Jeannie's so pretty I'd like to know if she's "something".

Looking at the link, these were definitely not Cuckoo's but they also had the same body colour as Jeannie all over, not a different coloured neck. Sorry, I have no idea what they were except cute and very tempting

It seems they have the same sort of colours as other chooks (from the breed standard, it says stuff like "same as wyandotte").... There is a huge long list of "types". If you've mixed up the "types" then I suppose like all "mutts" it could be anything. I had just hoped somebody might be more familiar with feather patterns than I am (know NOTHING). I'll try to get a better photo of Jeannie one day, maybe I'll open a thread for feedback as to what she could be crossed from.

That's one aspect I'm glad to avoid not living in the country - no foxes or other "meanies" trying to eat my animals. I'd build fort knox if I was out in "the wilderness".

I've seen advertised solar-powered chook house doors that close automatically and open up in the morning.  Have you seen those?  That might be useful where you are, Anniebee.

I live in the city, nothing like wilderness.

There are wetlands nearby but I'm a few minutes walk to two different train stations and an entertainment centre (Madonna played there the other night when she eventually turned up) I'm one street away from a main road etc etc. and the council has a fox trap set in my back yard ATM. It's been there two weeks and they're going to keep it set for another week.

I am hatching and buying birds ATM because Mr Fox has visited me a couple of times and killed or dragged off my babies. I lost two while the trap was in the back yard.

Council found a fox road kill a block from my home this week and I have found a couple of wild bird kills outside my run recently. Not sure what is responsible but I'm not taking chances.

Council told me that they have found them living in the back corners of sheds, in car bodies in people's yards and under low stumped houses in suburbia. I was blasé about them in the city until they struck.
