Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks @MyHaven and @Teila
The two black ones were sold to me as black Orpingtons. Not 100% I got what I paid for though.

Carla the little one did have a crop issue that I took her to the vet for and that has cleared up. They are now just over 3wks old and I feel like I am way out of my depth. My daughters and I love them to death but still quite stressful.

Can anyone help with a baby bird identification? I believe the bird which is feeding it is a Magpie Lark? However, I do not believe this is it's baby? The larger, browner bird is definitely a youngster because it is constantly asking for food and the black and white one is feeding it. However, the baby is so much bigger than the one sticking with it? I will try and get a clearer picture of the baby ............ Edited to Add: I was right, it is not the parent .. the baby is a Koel "The true Koels, Eudynamys, are a genus of Cuckoos from Asia, Australia and the Pacific. They are large sexually dimorphic cuckoos which eat fruits and insects and have loud distinctive calls". Well, there ya go .. I did not know we had Cuckoos :/ That poor little Magpie Lark trying to keep that huge baby fed ;) PS. The girls are not impressed by his constant demands for food and keep raising the alarm. Yesterday he was just sitting in the middle of the lawn and they were freaking out! lol
Yes, cuckoo! I've seen pee wees raising them. Cruel twist for motherhood bonds.

Relax. There is plenty of support here.

Ask as many questions as you like.

Hey everyone, I'm new to chickens & have a young flock of three beautiful girls (council here in QLD only allows us to have 5).

Wondering if anyone might be able to help me with our little "special" Carla. I bought her just over a week ago & she has always had a baldish neck and scruffily looking feathers. She is also a little bit on the smaller side even though I know she has been getting enough food and water. She isn't getting pecked, she has no infections & wondering if she is just going to out grow her "ugly duckling" phase or should I be concerned that she is sick.

Many Thanks!!!

Welcome. :) at 3-4 weeks your chicks will still be feathering in. Some treats like cooked rice and sardines or boiled eggs will keep them happy. Remember that once they are eating more solid foods that they do require access to the ground or grit added to their feed. :)

My little girls are fine and they were only 9 and 12 weeks when I got them, they can run pretty fast..... Baby chicks might not be able to get away if someone tried to grab them.
Thats great to hear! I figure if they can hold their own against the dogs then they should be able to be safe around crows:)

Hi mooandmcgee! Welcome! I'm new to chickens too so I can not help you at this stage with your little Carla. But I just love your photos and I have to say they are VERY cute chickies. I became the proud 'Mum' of 4 hens about 6 weeks ago but were already at full size when I got them. One day, when I'm retired and dont work full time, I will raise chickens from babies too

Keep us updated with your little one!

Aww it's always nice to see different animals getting along. My cat has an understanding with the girls, give each other enough space and she won't get chased lol.

Welcome mooandmcgee! I'm also a Queenslander, from Brissy. Your trio are beautiful! There's so much to look forward to as they grow :)
