Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

MyHaven .... have to agree with Teila that you might have double trouble around there - foxes - - - and  feral cats, which can grow mighty large.

I doubt a fox would ever enter a house to beat up a cat, with all those human smells around in the house.   A large male feral tom cat might though.

I hope anti-biotics will fix all the bacteria that can occur in puncture wounds on a cat ( or anything ).   And I trust your lovely cat recovers well.   I am sure she will, with the vet. intervention you immediately sought.

Abcesses can form quickly from puncture wounds ( teeth in particular ) .... in cat attacks.   And maybe your little girl cat was too overwhelmed to fight back, or did not have the size or 'feral' instinct, to do so.

My only advice ( which doesn't sit well with a lot of people ) ... is - - - lock all your precious animals / birds up at night, with no exception.   Manually let them out to toilet or scratch around, in the a.m. but ( if possible ) not too early.   Foxes don't mind the dawning of a new day, and will continue a hunt if they are hungry enough - into the daytime.   Mentioned a while back, of a friend who lost her Siamese cat to a fox, at midday - which she saw happen.   Grief stricken she was, and in shock.

We can't be held to ransom by foxes though, so we can only all do the best we can for our furry and feathered loved ones.

And as you have said again, that you have snakes as well, it's still my bet it was possibly a small snake that bit your chick, injecting  its' poison.   Rats also dig like crazy - large holes to get into wherever they want ... and they also chew chunks away on wooden doors ( I discovered ) to gain entry to chook food.   A large rat might also kill a small chicken, but how through small wire, I cannot imagine.

Cheers .........

Absolutely agree, everyone should be locked up at night to keep them and our wildlife safe.

Aw your poor kitty that's so terrible!!! Hope she is back to 100% soon.

My goodness; foxes, snakes, rats, eagles, cats, other birds this is all so intense.

This is going to sound totally stupid but I never knew there were foxes in Aus. Hahahaha!!!

Building our chicken run bullet proof to hopefully keep our girls as safe as possible. It's amazing just how much we love them already.

A friend had a goanna in her run on the weekend. It got trapped stealing eggs - she felt sorry for it because it got so stressed trying to get out. She's in a more rural setting though.

Our local Woolworths have antibacterial wipes freely available at the trolley point now

Yay, and not a moment too soon. We have them here too. Apparently shopping trolley handles and the swings in public playgrounds have the highest count of germs and are where we are most likely to pick up viruses.
After inspecting my slw coop yesterday I think I have finally beaten those red mites. Will pick up a few more cans of surface spray today, just to be sure. :)

Good morning folks

Hey Anniebee of course I have no problem with you “bibbing” and yep, I have taken note of your advice and will not try and feed him again unless he is all grown up and still visiting. While he is still being fed by his adopted mumma, he flies quite well and is probably more of a juvenile than a baby. Not sure mumma can beat him up, he is at least twice her size

sjturner79 I agree with MyHaven in that your girls must be so well behaved .. not a chance I could lock two of my broodies together; feathers would fly

Congrats on winning the battle with the mites Fancy

Totally random and just sharing ..... our cats use the white, crystal kitty litter.

Quiet, petite, lightweight Chimee .... gets in, does her business and shakes her paws on the way out. Hardly makes a paw print and rarely takes any litter with her when she leaves.

Loud, boofy Syba … gets in, throws a dance party, picks up paws full of litter and tosses them as far as he can [trying out for the Cat Olympics Gold Medal in litter tossing] gets out walks around the place depositing kitty litter as he goes [I am thinking from some hidden stash he has in a pouch or something], goes back to the litter, throws another dance party .. repeat three or four times .. then, finally does his business and closes the session with tosses of more paws full of litter around the place just for good measure.

I joke that I will have to go over to the neighbours and apologise for the kitty litter all over their place also

And, if I ever hear their kids say “look mum it has been snowing” I better get over there pronto before they try and make snow angels!

Congratulations Fancychooklady getting rid of mites would have been really hard.

Thankfully this year for the first time i have not had to confront a goanna in the pens. I'm not really a fan after one ran over my legs one day.

My cat does that he likes to spread it all over the room. Wonder if it's a male thing ?

Maybe cause we are rural but have never seen that at any of our stores. Could be cause people out here wouldn't be all that bothered by a few germs i would think. Noted i understand the need if you have a small child that you are putting in a baby seat.

Gratz on finally beating the mites :weee

Oh just as well, once when I was shopping in Sydney a lady had her poodle in the baby seat, she couldn't understand why the staff weren't impressed . From then on I took a bottle of eucalyptus in my bag and wiped down the seat before I would put my baby in it.

What on earth is a dog doing in a shopping Centre, sounds like a grocery store having a trolly too. Companion animals are one thing but that is too much!
