Hi all

Still kind of new to this chicken rearing thing- I have 2 girls: greedy guts and clever girl.

My girls have recently starting to lose feathers on their necks, just wanted to check if it is normal moulting or if it is mites/lice issue? When I first noticed this on Greedy Guts, I thought it was mites so gave her a full dusting of DE. Now I've notices Clever Girl has it too?

It is Autumn after all, so could it just be moulting? Cheers

It's probably just moulting. I have one that always just moults on her neck and I have one at the moment who is going decidedly bald on her bottom half. Worst moult she has ever had.

If you think they actually have mites the DE will do diddly squat on an active infestation.

Good morning folks

Good to hear the auction went well sjturner79 and look forward to the pic(s) of your new girl. With chicken math being the curse that is, I think you did really well considering the temptation.

MyHaven I am sorry to hear of your cat’s abscess; poor thing is in the wars

Congrats on the bubs and the newbies; looking forward to those pics also. It IS all happening at your place, congrats on the first egg, it is a beauty!

CluckerFeet that is a great avatar .. well done! I love the picture of Dapple!

Fizzybelle I echo what Potato Chip said; are you picking moulting Mabel up? My first experience with a hard moult was Dusty and I came home from work to find masses of black feathers everywhere and Dusty moping under the coop, my first thought was that she had been attacked and I picked her up .. she did not like that one little bit.

I learnt not long after that that the pin feathers and whole moult process can be painful for them so picking them up at this time is reserved for emergencies only.

Hi there newmotherofhens. Great chookie’s names. While my research on moulting indicates that the majority of the time, the head and neck is where they first start, I have experienced different and my gals seems to start wherever takes their fancy.

I can see some pin feathers in your pics which indicate a moult, I was a little concerned that the bare patches do not show pin feathers so I zoomed in on a pic of Dusty’s head moult and sure enough, while she has pin feathers all over, behind the ear is bare. I am definitely no expert though and hopefully someone with more experience than myself will chime in.

Thanks. It can hardly be called a flock, but I have Chile the RIR, Ebony - the Australorp in the previous picture - then I have Little Angel the light sussex and Dapple, a plymouth rock. I've owned a couple other chooks at other times - even a rooster - but it's been fairly unlucky. We couldn't keep the roo when he started crowing (because of regulations in my area) another chook got taken by a cat. My lovely little barnevelder had cancer and died before her first lay. Sorry I got a little off track there. I hope to own a lot more chickens when I'm older and maybe live somewhere where I can have a rooster. Here's a picture I took of Dapple earlier today. What kinda chickens do you own? You sound like you have plenty more chooks than I do!
I love your pics. They all look very interested in the camera - and I call that a flock. Like a family it doesn't matter how many there are. There are many of us who wish we could keep a rooster. I have too many chickens at the moment because I've done some hatching to build my numbers after a fox killed some of my birds and where I now live I can have up to 20. I have orders for some birds. So what I have now is not what I'll end up with. I don't name anybody until I know they are keepers. So the list of keepers goes. 2x blue Australorps Liz Taylor and Fraidy 2x Barnevelders Cagney and Lacey who crows like a rooster and so did her mother. 2x orpingtons not yet laying hard to name, one thinks she's a D'uccle 1x cuckoo Marans which is actually pure black - Ninja 1 naked neck - Nelly 1 black Australorp I suspect bantam cross 2 Dorkings chicks 2 brahmas hatched this weekend 2 Sicilian buttercups 3 D'uccle - Honey and still considering names 1 Pekin 1 bantam cross - Flubber I always get to know my chooks before I name them. The unnamed ones above are too new.

I expected a teeny weeny too. The middle egg in the photo is about the same size as my only ever Silkie used to lay 40grams. The D'uccle eggs plural (because I got an identical one today) are a little bit smaller but not much. 29 and 30grams. And these are first eggs. Given the size of the hen they are huge. That's a large egg at the bottom I put there for perspective weighs 81grams.

Let me get this straight - Beatrice is in a run and coop? With who else? Mabel sleeps in a carrier, where does she run? Where do you collect her from to put her to bed and what time of day is it?

Yay congrats on your first Belgie egg. People are amazed when they see the size of their eggs compared to their little bodies.

Ok tonight is the night. The girls get the sleep in their coop.
FancyChookLady every surface has been sprayed and is ready (thanks for that tip).

I have the bedding and there is wood chips for the floor of the coop. The Livestock Suppply shop gave me small bag because I was so undecided. Hahaha! They just wanted to get rid on me. I also have meal worms to get the girls in their new digs.

Hit me with ANYTHING ELSE I may need to know or get for their fist night.
Hahaha!!! I make myself laugh at how ridiculous I seem to all of you I know.

You look like you are good to go. I would just make sure your wood chips aren't cedar as they are bad for chickens . Get yourself a good pair of shoes as if you are like me when i first started with chickens you will be back and forth to the coop checking on them half the night.
