NNNOOOO! NOT THE GARDERN!!!! Hahaha! I'm not the gardener in our house, that's hubby's gig. Our yard is very non fussy, mostly bamboos, helaconias, and citrus. The only one plant I would cry over is our little coffee tree.

Missed just one day here, and found 51 posts to catch up on ?? Have read them all - and as always, so much information, enjoyable reading and friendliness.

mooandmcgee .....

Do you know which particular type of coffee tree you have ? There are many species of it.

If you still have the little ticket that comes with all purchased plants ( or should ) ... you could tell from that which species it is.

The reason I ask, is that while most are not toxic to animals / humans - some definitely are.

So perhaps to be on the safe side, you might think of moving it ( not recommended though ) .... or preferably putting a wide circle of bird wire around it, to keep the chooks from pecking at the red / green berries that will appear one day ( in maybe a couple of years ? - or already ? - not knowing how old your plant is ).

I don't have one here, so know very little about them - but something rang a bell when you mentioned it, so did a bit of research. Suggest you try to find the species and phone a nursery or someone in the Horticultural Society, to ask if the fruit is poisonous to chooks.

Good luck - with both chooks and coffee plant.

Cheers ........

It's all happening at my place.

The cats been back to the vet. It has an abscess where it was attacked.

The brahmas that I expected to hatch late tomorrow started pipping yesterday. The first hatched last night. Photos when they've fluffed up.

The Sicilian buttercups have arrived. I just love them already. Photos to follow later.

And one of the d'uccles has layed its first egg. It's huge for the size of the bird AND it was in my new nest design to stop the crows. Here's the egg.
From top to bottom d'uccle, an Australorps egg (one of her first) and a Sussex.

I expected much smaller. Maybe she (and I'm not sure which one of two) was trying to match the size of the nest egg.

MyHaven ....

Congrats on the eggs ... especially your little d'uccles first effort.

Looking forward to seeing pics of everything else - especially the Sicilian buttercups. From on-line pics, they are a beautiful bird. Another breed to add to my list of 'one-day-I-will-have's' to choose from ....

Not at all surprised at the abscess that has formed on your cat. It's almost a given for cat bites that break the skin on other cats ( bacteria galore ) - and it underscores ( a probably roaming tom-cat ) following your poor little girl into the house and 'having a go' at her. At least it will probably be lanced, filled with anti-biotic, and she would be on anti-biotics for a week or so.

All should then be well.

Cheers .......

Thanks

I was hoping I got antibiotics in her quickly enough. Sadly not.

I got another D'uccle egg today. So I don't know if I have one or two laying. It's a bit coincidental if two started laying one day after the other but people say they aren't good layers so it might be a bit much to expect an egg two days in a row from the one hen. Time will tell.

Awww congrats! I don't know if you have any Silkies, but if you do, would you say a D'uccle egg is the same size as a Silkie egg? I'm kinda expecting something the size of a peanut M&M when Beatrice lays her first egg lol.

Does anyone else have, or have had this problem. When I go to put Mabel to bed she is a horror child. Twice she's pecked my eye, and in the same darn eye. She fidgets, she doesn't shut up, she just gets super cranky pants. Beatrice was a pain to put to sleep on her own until I got her integrated into the flock, jumping out of bed, calling out to me, but Mabel's attitude is worse. She's sleeping in the pet carrier, so no jumping out this time, but just a lot of attitude. She should be used to the routine, it's been a week now. I'm sure it's just her being a tired child not wanting to sleep alone, and she'll be better once a member of the flock, but for now, I think I'll get some clear plastic glasses for bedtime. Apart from that, she's a little angel. Covered in pin feathers though, and dander everywhere!

I found that have young chooks in groups less than 3 makes them a pain. I'm not familiar with du'ccle eggs but silkies eggs are definitely far larger than peanut m&ms. From my silkies they can be as small as a golf ball for the first couple, but they do get bigger.

I expected a teeny weeny too. The middle egg in the photo is about the same size as my only ever Silkie used to lay 40grams. The D'uccle eggs plural (because I got an identical one today) are a little bit smaller but not much. 29 and 30grams. And these are first eggs. Given the size of the hen they are huge. That's a large egg at the bottom I put there for perspective weighs 81grams.

Let me get this straight - Beatrice is in a run and coop? With who else? Mabel sleeps in a carrier, where does she run? Where do you collect her from to put her to bed and what time of day is it?
