Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Looks like my blue marans has abandoned her nest. I am thinking the eggs were to old when she decided to sit. was broken and didn't smell good. I have left the rest but will throw them tomorrow if she doesn't go back.

I've had a few hens leg it in the last few days too. Currently building the mother of all vege/ orchards , so I've buried quite a few almost full term eggs in the footings.
I'll be lucky to get 3 or 4 to hatch from my Adelaide eggs , candled the ones that the crows hadn't managed to steal and half of them weren't fertile.

I am thinking our rather hot summer has messed with them this year.

That's a shame. I'd love to have a Marans or two for those dark, dark eggs.

The are really great chickens to have they love freeranging and nearly knock me over to get out in the mornings i have even seem them at the top of my neighbours yard 5 acres away.. Luckily they don't care.

That's not good, good luck with the left overs. @#$%crows.

I let all my girls free range today as I was home and the weather was great to work in their coops. They stayed out for a bit but mostly they kept going back to their own runs.
I had a few tussles my little pekin tried to take on Lucky (australorp) over some bread and there was heaps. Lucky just pushed her and turned around. I am hoping if they can get on, I can open all the back into one run.

Howdy folks

LuckysMum that sounds like a fun day at your place.

I got nuff'n! .. lots of activity here as we prepare for the move. Granted, I might not be moving until August but hubby leaves on the 6th of March and we have lots of stuff for him to get done before he goes and before I am doing it all solo.

Such bizarre weather we are having. Your freezing and we had 40c on Saturday. Did get a tiny amount of rain on Sunday possibly 5mm or so I haven't checked the gauge yet.

Maybe I shouldn't have opened my mouth ???

... tomorrow is a 'severe' weather warning for fire, for most districts.

Not ultra hot, but high winds, which is not good news, but hot enough - reaching to the low 30's. A bit less in the Dandenong ranges, though ( I trust ).

Big downpour 36 hours ago, which I hope drenched the canopy and undergrowth enough to dissaude arsonist bustards, and stop any other fires from being started in this neck of the woods. Always at the back of the mind, with escape plans etc - , during summer up here. With hoses on mist for the chookies. So far, Melbourne and wide surrounds have had a mildish summer.

Hope everyones' hatchings continue to produce good chickies.

Cheers ~~

Turned out to be hardly a breath of wind, thank heaven, but a bit hotter than forecast. So the BOM got another one wrong. They are usually correct though. Hot and sticky today.

Overall, this summer has been humid but much milder than we are used to. In fact the past few summers have been more like Queensland humidity without your high temps.

Had many years where we had 4 and 5 days heat waves - high 30's into the 40's, repeated over and over every summer ... bad, with northerly winds. Very scary stuff. Similar to what Sydney has had to put with this summer.

My guess would be an average temperature over this summer here - mid to high 20's only. We've had three little 'heat waves' lasting 2 days each. Also cold enough at times to put the heater on, and wear woollen clothing, especially overnight, except for two nights that remained 20's temps and uncomfortable.

As you said - weather gone mad.

Cheers ~~
