Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

So excited I just had to share! Check out the size of this thing! They had some tree loppers on site so to keep Jessie safe they popped her into the now partially wired run. Now, factoring in that Jessie is your average sized border collie and we only have 5 x bantams  I might have to get more chickens! ;) lol
So cool! I want a new run. I am sick of the stable yard being an all purpose animal pen.

The tree lopper was brought in at our Forrest Beach house to remove 3 very large palms which were close to the house and interfering with the installation of the new guttering. After I got the pictures I was quickly on the phone to hubby to ask what had been done with the off cuts and he said that the majority of them had been taken away but he had kept 5 or 6 because he knew I would have a use for them! lol .. great minds and all that

Anyways, my thought was to pop them in the run, in a cluster but at staggered heights for the girls to perch on.

My question .. They are palm stumps; do you think they will be OK for the girls to sit on and possibly clean their beaks on or could there be a toxicity risk?

Not sure about the stumps but we used the dried out leaves as nests because they keep the crows out.

Sorry for my lack of postings lately but we are still trying to clean up from the super cell that trashed the place a month a go. With just hubby and I and him only being home on the weekends it's gunna take forever . We finally got all the downed trees out of the main chicken pen cut and moved yesterday so at least one of them is free of trees now.. 3 more large pens to go as well as still about another 40 or so trees on the rest of the property. We have almost finished everything around the house yard.

That looks amazing. You will definitely need more girls ;)

Always lots of jobs to do and these freak weather events certainly do add to the ' list of chores to do '.
Yesterday morning I found that momma silkie had hatched 5 and left 3 eggs to go cold. They were stone cold but one had pipped . I could see the beak , but no movement or cheeping. I was in a hurry , 80th birthday to get to, so I popped them under another hen. When I got home one had hatched and the other 2 were pipped but shrink wrapped. I peeled off as much membrane and shell as I could , but once I saw blood I stopped. Went out this morning to find 3 healthy splash silkies.

@Teila just wondering if you have to treat the posts at all, and do you concrete them straight into the ground? I'm thinking of expanding my coop/run and not wanting to use treated pine in case my girls peck at it, I don't know whether I have to do anything to the ends to prevent rot and termites. I have limited experience with building stuff :)

I decided to not use the palm stumps in the coop as perching blocks; while I could not find a truly definitive connection to toxicity I decided to err on the side of caution as there are so many other things we could use that we know are safe. I will definitely find another purpose for them in the garden when I get up there.

Hey @SlyDog The round posts used to support the coop and run? They are treated pine I believe.

The coop we have here was built with them last Easter so 12 months ago and the girls are fine.

On the coop here we did not even concrete or cement them into the ground, just dug big holes and popped them it .. they have survived many storms and just recently XTC Debbie when she came for a visit.

The coop up at Forrest Beach, however, due to it being located in a more cyclone friendly area, they were concreted in.

Good morning folks

I thought I had better check in .. so much going on at the moment.

The coop at Forrest Beach is coming along nicely and the roof is on meaning that the coop floor can now be done. It looks like the pets could be relocated in a couple of weeks and we have a tentative end date of June 9

So looking forward to it all being over, seeing hubby again and having some relax time.
