Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I mentioned recently that my two big girls ( Mandy Welsummer and Molly RIR ) ... seem to have ceased laying altogether. Both seem to be over their moults, but I have found quite a few random feathers still being shed. However, both are back in full feather ( from my observations ). Both girls are what are termed "aged" ( rising 5 yrs of age ), and I don't really expect them to lay too much more if at all.

Mindy Araucana on the other hand is laying like she did as a 2 year old !! ...

Now ... both the big girls have very shrunken combs, pink / pale, and 'dry' looking, but no scales or anything nasty on them. Their combs are the size of those of a pre POL very young chicken. Mindy on the other hand has a lovely red 'pea' comb, is squatting and laying. Yet they are all the same age ???

I have been rummaging around on the internet about all this ... and I am not worried, as both big girls are healthy, and eating up a storm - but would be interested in anyones' ideas about shrunken combs, here on BYC.

Is it normal for aged chickens to have shrunken combs ( is all I am really asking ) ?

Cheers ~

Hiya Sam, still trying to work this new format out. Nice to hear from you again. The pic is one of my project splash silkies. :frow

I'm trying to work this format out too.
I love your silkie are splash silkies common. Her house looks great too.
I lost my poor Tiger (silkie) on the weekend. The girls were over and I thought they would be really upset, but they took it in their stride. I think because we have lost a few chooks over the last few months due to age that they realise it happens. They were very sad but understood that animals die. The one they worry about the most is Bear because he is 9 now and German Shepherds don't have as long a life span as the smaller dogs.
