Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks MJ, I've not got all that many Sussex left and I'm starting to think about getting some more. I'd love to do a Blue Tailed Buff breeding project, but if I can't find the correct Coronations, guess I'll just have to settle for something else 😂
How's your flock doing? I've gone and lost your thread yet again 🫣
They're going quite well. I lost one of the pullets, not sure why.

So now there's a coronation sussex cockerel (I have no clue if he's blue based) and pullet, and the older ladies. Mary (the oldest) is on suprelorin but also on a course of antibiotics to shake off a uterine infection. The others seem fine, but are moulting and growing new feathers now.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that :hugs

I'm assuming you will be looking for a home for him soon? Are you enjoying the sussex much?

I hope that helps her! How old is she now?

I have quite a few moulting heavily right now, makes them look terrible but they should be looking normal again before long 🥰

I'm not entirely sure then, I'm not sure how bad feeding a high protein feed such as starter or grower would be long term, or a medicated feed.
I know it's not the most popular choice but I just feed all mine the Vella Stock Feeds Free range scratch mix, it's about the only suitable mixed flock feed available to me.
Supplementing Calcium for laying hens is easy enough.
Would it work if I feed them 50/50 pullet grower and scratch mix with calcium in a separate box for the girls, with kitchen scraps?

I miss her. She was the only one who ever sat on my lap.

They seem like nice chooks. I haven't been able to find him a home. So he's being humanely killed by the vet this week.

She's 8. She seems to be improving on the antibiotics.

I'm looking forward to a freshly feathered flock!

OK I’ll look for it, is it ok for hens too? I have shells I can give them for calcium
It's for hens and roos, although only ideal if they are pasture raised or be able to free range in the backyard. The feed is also low on protein content, so I supplement the feed with meat/seafood scrap.
Sometimes I mix milk powder with flour and feed the dough to my chickens, but that is a very personal choice.

Hey all do any of your chooks get swooped by magpies? Mine just got swooped today while free ranging, she is fine but I don’t like how this could end, my roosters will chase them off but magpies are fast
What can I do to protect them if I need to?

At my place the run is covered, so if a magpie decided to make a habit of swooping I'd keep the chooks in the run. But covering a run can be costly if you can't DIY it.

My run is covered too, I just like to let them range, makes them happier.. I could put a net over the fences of the area I let them in but that would be tricky
