Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Nice! I love bantams but eggs are a BIG part of our diet, so we need the biggest ones we can get.
Welsummers would be good for that. They lay large eggs but are a middle weight bird, and the lacing on their wings are to die for.

I've gone from 1 egg evey other day from my chooks to 5 this morning including my first egg from one of my Australorp pullets!!! She laid it and promptly went broody, lol. She will be 28 weeks old on the weekend. On another note, I have 9/9 turkey eggs fertile (from my bronze turkeys) so I'll be have poults popping out everywhere. I love the turkeys, they are quite lovely.

I've just edited it to note it was 5 eggs this morning, not 3. My Isa's have also just started up again it seems.

Quote: Thanks, I'll keep that in mind for our future flock. Welsummers are some of the most beautiful chickens I've ever seen. I'd choose one over a Minorca any day. Sorry, Minorca lovers!

Lol, Minorca's can seem a little boring with them being just black. That said, I have Black Australorps and they are some of my favourite birds, so big, fluffy and with awesome personalities.

I have some Minorca eggs in the incubator (along with so many other eggs and could have put inn twice as many eggs) and I love them as the eggs are so white and clear that you can see everything so clearly. I just love watching those tiny heart beats and seeing them swimming in the shells.

You're right, I adore Australorps too because of that lovely green sheen of their feathers. I didn't know the eggs were clear - that's really interestinng. Hey, I seem to be the only one on this thread with no Minorca experience!
I don't intend to keep mine, but sell them (I got them in a mixed dozen of eggs sent). Baby chicks are great, no matter the breed (though Barnevelder chicks are seriously adorable and it's a shame I can't stand the grown chickens as the ones I've owned have all been standoffish or down-right mean).

Sounds like you are doing a great job Trish. Mackay nights at this time of year sounds tempting warm to me lol. I know it is different when you live there though.
I keep my eggs in the fridge all year round.

Pinky i am so sorry for the loss of your little chick it is never easy to loose one.

Thanks :)

I love living here, The only thing I don't like is the summer heat lol
